On Monday evening, a parcel bomb detonated in a residential building in Monaco, wounding at least three people, including Ukrainian tycoon Vadym Yermolaiev. The explosion, which occurred around 9:00 pm local time on a street bordering France, has shaken the normally tranquil principality.

Monaco's Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, confirmed that a couple in their 50s or 60s suffered life-threatening injuries, while a 13-year-old sustained less serious wounds. The teenager is believed to be related to the couple. Four others were treated for shock and cuts from shattered windows.

Investigation and Suspect

Public prosecutor Stéphane Thibault stated that a suspect left a bag or package in the building's lobby before fleeing. Surveillance footage shows the individual escaping toward Beausoleil, a French municipality just across the border. An aide to France's Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that police are working to locate the perpetrator.

Mirmand noted that the device contained bolts and buckshot, indicating a deliberate attempt to cause maximum harm. Witnesses have provided information to help identify the suspect. Around 50 firefighters and 80 security personnel were deployed to the scene.

Prince Albert II described the incident as a "heinous crime" and a shock to the Monegasque community. Mirmand added that this is the first such attack in the principality's history.

Victim's Background

Vadym Yermolaiev, a Ukrainian multi-millionaire residing in Monaco, has been under sanctions from Kyiv since December 2023. Ukrainian security services reportedly linked these sanctions to his alcohol business activities in Russian-occupied Crimea. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and investigators are exploring all possibilities.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions across Europe, with ongoing conflicts and security concerns. For context, recent events such as the Ukrainian drone strike on a Moscow refinery and debates over EU protection for Ukrainian men highlight the volatile geopolitical landscape.

Monaco, known for its safety and affluence, has been thrust into an unfamiliar security crisis. The collaboration between Monegasque and French authorities underscores the cross-border nature of the investigation. As the search for the suspect continues, the principality remains on edge.
