Pope Leo XIV is set to undertake an extensive six-day journey across Spain starting 6 June, covering more than 2,500 kilometres and delivering 12 speeches, five homilies, and five greetings. The itinerary spans four distinct locations: Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, reflecting a deliberate effort to engage with both the mainland and the Canary Islands.

Madrid: Royal Welcome and Youth Vigil

The pontiff arrives at Madrid-Barajas airport on Saturday 6 June at 10:30. A welcome ceremony at the Royal Palace of Madrid follows at 11:30, where King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía will hold a private meeting. At 12:30, the Pope addresses authorities, civil society, and the diplomatic corps in his first speech of the visit.

In the afternoon, he visits the Cedia 24 horas social centre in the Lucero neighbourhood, a facility run by the Archdiocese of Madrid. The Archdiocese will present a wooden tree carved by users of Cáritas Madrid’s Addiction Treatment Centre, and singer Niña Pastori will perform. At 20:30, after a popemobile tour, the Pope leads a prayer vigil in Plaza de Lima, answering questions on polarisation and the meaning of life. The event coincides with a Bad Bunny concert; Archbishop José Cobo has not ruled out a meeting between the artist and the Pope. As part of the “White and Yellow Night” initiative, 15 museums—including the Prado and Reina Sofía—and several churches will extend their hours to welcome pilgrims.

On Sunday 7 June, the Pope celebrates Mass at 10:00 followed by the Corpus Christi procession in Plaza de Cibeles. In the afternoon, he meets privately with the Order of Saint Augustine at the Apostolic Nunciature. At 18:00, he attends the “Weaving networks” gathering at the Movistar Arena, joined by figures such as Antonio Banderas, singer Rozalén, and badminton champion Carolina Marín. Dinner follows at the residence of Cardinal Archbishop José Cobo.

Political and Parliamentary Engagements

Monday 8 June begins with a meeting at 9:30 with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at the Nunciature. At 10:30, the Pope addresses the Congress of Deputies, becoming the first pontiff to speak before the Spanish parliament. Sánchez and the Pope are expected to meet at least four times during the visit: at Barajas, the Nunciature, Congress, and the Sagrada Familia. At 11:30, the Pope meets Spanish bishops at the Bishops’ Conference headquarters, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, he visits Almudena Cathedral for prayer and tribute to the Virgin, and at 19:00 he participates in a diocesan community event at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, featuring music, magic, and religious processions hosted by Christian Gálvez and Patricia Pardo, with performances by David Bustamante and magician Jorge Blass.

Barcelona: Prison Visit and Sagrada Familia

On Tuesday 9 June, the Pope meets volunteers at Ifema Pavilion 3 before flying to Barcelona, arriving at El Prat at 12:25. He leads the Midday Prayer at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, including a homily. At 20:00, he presides over a prayer vigil at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. Wednesday 10 June features a visit to Brians 1 prison, where he meets 80 inmates and hears testimony from two female prisoners. At 12:00, he enters the Abbey of Montserrat for the Holy Rosary and an address, followed by lunch with the Benedictine community. At 16:30, he visits the Church of Saint Augustine for another speech. The day culminates at 19:30 with Mass at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia and the inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ, with around 8,000 attendees expected.

Canary Islands: Migration Focus

On Thursday 11 June, the Pope flies to Gran Canaria, landing at Gando air base at 10:50. This leg revives a dream of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who had wanted to visit the islands to highlight migration issues. The first speech in the archipelago takes place at the port of Arguineguín at 11:40, where the Pope listens to testimony from four migrants from Africa and Latin America and lays a floral offering. The visit underscores the ongoing migration challenges facing the Canary Islands, a key entry point for irregular migration into Europe.

The trip’s estimated cost is €25 million, with an expected economic boost of €150 million, according to reports. For context, Spain’s unemployment recently hit a 17-year low, as noted in Spain's Unemployment Hits 17-Year Low as Employment Reaches Record High. The visit also coincides with broader travel trends, such as the rise of slow tourism across Europe, highlighted in Luxury cruise and rail combos gain traction as travelers embrace slow tourism across Europe.
