As the slow travel movement gains momentum across Europe, a growing number of holidaymakers are choosing to combine luxury cruises with iconic rail journeys. Rather than rushing through airports, these travelers are opting for itineraries that treat the journey itself as a destination—blending scenic train routes, immersive land tours, and ocean voyages into a single, seamless experience.

Travel agencies are responding with curated packages that promise the best of both worlds. From August, Inspiring Travel will offer a combined trip aboard the Orient Express Corinthian—the luxury brand’s first yacht—and the newly revamped La Dolce Vita Orient Express train. Guests will cruise the Adriatic coast from Dubrovnik to Venice before boarding the train for Rome, all in utmost luxury.

For those with more modest budgets, Cruise.co.uk has launched a cruise-and-rail collection for 2027, featuring six distinct itineraries. These include a 13-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona aboard Sun Princess, followed by a five-day escorted tour of northern Italy, with rail journeys to Lake Garda and Venice. Prices start at £2,499 (€2,889) per person.

Why combine cruise and rail?

“Travellers increasingly want the journey to be as memorable as the destination,” says Kaye Holland, a cruise and travel expert. “Rail travel offers a slower, more immersive way to experience a region, while cruising provides convenience and the ability to visit multiple destinations in a single trip. Together, they appeal to travellers looking for richer experiences without the stress of organising complex itineraries themselves.”

The approach allows travelers to see both the interior of a country—its mountains, lakes, and villages—from the train, and its coastline from the deck of a ship. As Cruise.co.uk’s Managing Director Tony Andrews puts it, these are “multi-centre holidays where the transport is a highlight, not just a necessity.”

Another standout itinerary is a 12-night journey featuring the Swiss Glacier Express, the Bernina Red Train, and a Mediterranean cruise. Starting at £2,799 (€3,236) per person, guests will enjoy escorted tours on the Bernina Red Train and other rail routes to Zermatt and Rome, plus a seven-night cruise on Enchanted Princess, with hotel stays in Switzerland and the Italian capital.

The trend is part of a broader shift toward slower, more sustainable travel across Europe. The EU’s ‘One Ticket, One Journey’ plan, for instance, aims to make rail booking as seamless as flying, further encouraging travelers to choose trains over planes. For those seeking to avoid air travel altogether, options like these offer a compelling alternative.

Other routes in the collection take in the Balkans by water and rail, and a 15-night journey visits the Rockies, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and several US national parks before exploring the American west coast by sea. All packages include return flights, overseas transfers, and local city taxes, with most departures limited to 25 guests.

“They offer a relaxed, rewarding and cost-effective way to travel, with every detail taken care of from start to finish,” Andrews adds. As travelers increasingly prioritize meaningful experiences over speed, the marriage of luxury cruising and iconic rail journeys looks set to become a defining feature of European tourism in the years ahead.
