On Friday, a Russian drone carrying explosives crashed into a residential apartment block in Galați, a city in eastern Romania near the border with Moldova. The impact ignited a fire on the building's roof, forcing an evacuation of residents. Two individuals suffered minor injuries, according to Romania's Foreign Minister, Toiu Oana.

Oana stated that the Romanian Air Force scrambled two aircraft and a helicopter after Russian drones appeared on radar, and pilots were authorized to engage. She described the incident as “a serious and irresponsible escalation” by Moscow. The drone had been “involved in the bombing of infrastructure in Ukraine” before crossing into Romanian airspace, the foreign ministry added.

NATO Response and Regional Tensions

In a statement released Friday, NATO condemned Russia's “recklessness” and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defenses against “all threats, including drones.” The alliance noted that it would continue to bolster its eastern flank, which has seen a surge in errant drone incursions in recent weeks. Similar incidents have been reported across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, raising concerns about the security of NATO's airspace.

Moscow has accused the Baltic states of allowing Ukraine to use their airspace for attacks on Russian territory, threatening retaliatory measures. In response, the Baltic governments, together with Nordic allies, issued a joint statement “firmly reject[ing] Russia’s blatant disinformation campaign and false claims.”

Romania has formally informed European Union member states, NATO allies, and the NATO Secretary General of the circumstances. Bucharest has requested an acceleration in the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania, a plea that aligns with broader efforts to protect critical infrastructure and civilian areas from aerial threats. For instance, systems like Beretta's Livet anti-drone turret, which uses eight shotguns to defend key sites, are being explored across the continent.

The incident in Galați underscores the spillover effects of the war in Ukraine, as Russian drone strikes increasingly target Ukrainian cities like Kharkiv and Odesa, sometimes straying into neighboring countries. A recent Russian drone barrage hit a residential area in Kharkiv, intensifying the humanitarian toll.

Romanian authorities are investigating the crash site, while local emergency services remain on alert. The building has been secured, and residents are being assisted with temporary accommodation. The foreign ministry reiterated that such actions by Russia represent a direct challenge to European security and the integrity of NATO's eastern borders.
