In just six days, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past the $1 billion mark at the global box office, becoming the second-fastest film in history to reach that milestone. Only 2019's Avengers: Endgame, which amassed a record $1.2 billion in its opening weekend, achieved the feat quicker.

The latest installment in Tom Holland's Spider-Man saga has defied expectations, delivering a much-needed win for Marvel Studios after a string of underperforming and critically lukewarm releases over the past five years. The film's success bodes well for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, a culmination of multiple superhero story arcs that many see as a make-or-break moment for the studio.

Why Brand New Day resonates

Several factors have contributed to the film's phenomenal performance. Euphoric word-of-mouth, positive reviews, and a more grounded, character-driven narrative that doesn't require extensive knowledge of the multiverse have all played a part. The on-screen and off-screen chemistry of Tom Holland and Zendaya, who are fast becoming the most bankable stars in Hollywood, has also been a major draw.

Both actors are enjoying a stellar summer, starring in both The Odyssey and Brand New Day. Together, the two films have reportedly grossed $1.8 billion worldwide, a figure expected to grow as The Odyssey opens in South Korea, China, and Japan over the coming weeks. Zendaya will next appear in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three in December, which could add another $800 million to her tally. And there's even a chance the couple could appear in Doomsday.

For now, Brand New Day is the fourth film of 2026 to cross the billion-dollar threshold, following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.012 billion), Michael ($1.016 billion), and Toy Story 5 ($1.068 billion). The Odyssey is close behind with $912 million and is poised to become the fifth.

Industry analysts believe Brand New Day could eventually climb to $2 billion, a feat achieved by only seven other films in cinema history. The movie's success is particularly notable given the recent struggles of the superhero genre, and it underscores the enduring appeal of Spider-Man as a character.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who took over from Jon Watts, has been praised for grounding the story in the character's comic-book roots while delivering spectacular action sequences. Our review noted: "Cretton does a great job in committing to the character's comic roots reset, making the stakes believable, and ensuring the emotion matches the spectacle."

Despite some shortcomings, the film is "bolstered by consistently strong action sequences and a terrific performance from Holland, who can now safely be crowned the greatest on-screen Spider-Man." This sentiment is echoed by fans across Europe, where the film has broken records in markets like the UK, France, and Germany.

The success of Brand New Day also highlights the global appeal of superhero cinema, even as debates rage about the future of the genre. For Marvel, it's a clear signal that audiences still crave well-crafted, character-led stories. As the studio gears up for Avengers: Doomsday, the pressure is on to deliver a worthy follow-up.

For now, Spider-Man's web has never been stronger, and the box office numbers prove it.
