Two individuals were stabbed on Wednesday in Golders Green, a north London neighbourhood known for its substantial Jewish population, according to local Jewish groups. The attack adds to a troubling pattern of antisemitic incidents that have escalated in the region since late March.

The Shomrim Jewish neighbourhood watch reported on social media that a man was seen running with a knife, attempting to stab Jewish members of the public. Two people were wounded and are receiving treatment from Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer ambulance service. The suspect has been arrested, the Community Security Trust (CST) confirmed on X, urging anyone with information to contact police, Shomrim, or the CST.

Political Response and Broader Context

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the stabbing in parliament, describing it as “deeply concerning” and emphasising the need for a thorough police investigation. “We all need to be absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the like of which we have seen too much recently,” he told lawmakers.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the attack, calling it “appalling” and thanking emergency services and volunteers for their swift response. “London’s Jewish community have been the target of a series of shocking antisemitic attacks. There must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society,” Khan wrote on X.

The stabbing comes after a spate of arson attacks on Jewish sites across north London. In late March, four ambulances belonging to Hatzola were set ablaze. Subsequent incidents targeted the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, a Jewish charity’s premises, and the Finchley Reform Synagogue. Police have arrested 26 people in connection with these attacks, which began after the start of the US-Iran war on 28 February.

A little-known group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), believed to be linked to Iran, has claimed responsibility for many of the arsons. The group’s name translates to “The Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand.” A London court has already set a 2027 trial for four individuals charged in the Jewish ambulance arson case.

Golders Green, a district in the London Borough of Barnet, has historically been a hub for Jewish life in the capital. The recent violence has heightened concerns among community leaders about safety and the effectiveness of existing security measures. The CST, which provides security advice and protection for Jewish institutions, is working closely with police to address the threats.

This incident underscores broader challenges facing European cities in combating antisemitism. While the UK has robust hate crime legislation, the frequency and coordination of these attacks suggest a need for enhanced vigilance and international cooperation. The European Union has previously condemned antisemitic acts across member states, but the UK, now outside the bloc, must rely on its own resources and partnerships.

As investigations continue, local residents and Jewish organisations are calling for stronger action to prevent further violence. The stabbing in Golders Green serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats faced by Jewish communities in Europe and the importance of solidarity in the face of hate.
