Ukraine is undergoing a significant political reset as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reshuffles his government, replacing key ministers including the prime minister. The move comes as Russian forces intensify their attacks, particularly targeting energy infrastructure and civilian areas. Sasha Vakulina reports from Kyiv that the reshuffle aims to streamline decision-making and strengthen the country's air defences, which have been under severe strain.

EU Support Package and Accession Progress

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday to announce a new support package for Ukraine. The package includes fresh funding, progress on EU accession, and a new agreement on drone production. Jorge Liboreiro reports that the EU is also expected to open the sixth accession cluster for Ukraine, ending a deadlock that had been exploited by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. This marks a significant step forward in Ukraine's integration into the European Union.

The UK has also joined the EU's €90 billion loan for Ukraine, committing to a fair contribution. This multilateral effort underscores the broad European commitment to supporting Kyiv in its defence against Russian aggression.

Humanitarian Crisis and Global Food Security

World Food Programme Executive Director Carl Skau joined Europe Today to discuss the dire humanitarian situation in Ukraine. He warned that the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East are threatening global food security, as disruptions to grain exports and agricultural production drive up prices and exacerbate hunger in vulnerable regions. The WFP is working to provide emergency food aid to millions of Ukrainians displaced by the conflict.

Gibraltar Agreement and Cyprus Tensions

In other European news, Spain, the UK, and the EU have implemented a landmark agreement on Gibraltar, removing border controls between Spain and the British Overseas Territory. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo both welcomed the deal, which aims to ease post-Brexit tensions and facilitate cross-border movement.

Meanwhile, Cyprus faces renewed challenges in reunification talks. Turkish Cypriot leaders rejected the appointment of the EU's new special representative for Cyprus, prompting Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna to call for a renewed diplomatic push. The island remains divided, and the EU is seeking to revive negotiations under its mediation.

Spain Reaches World Cup Final

On the cultural front, Spain reached their first FIFA World Cup final since 2010 after defeating France 2-0. They will face either England or Argentina in Sunday's showdown, a match that has captured the attention of football fans across Europe.
