Catalan authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a wildfire that has scorched 1,280 hectares on the Costa Brava, near Girona. The blaze, driven by powerful tramontana winds, has forced around 12,000 residents to stay indoors as emergency services battle to contain the flames.

The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, has spread rapidly through dry vegetation, threatening homes and infrastructure along the popular tourist coastline. The arrest was made by the Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional police force, though details about the suspect's identity or motive have not yet been released.

Widespread Confinement and Agricultural Damage

Local authorities have issued confinement orders for several municipalities, urging residents to remain in their homes to avoid smoke inhalation and to keep roads clear for emergency vehicles. The affected area includes parts of the Alt Empordà region, known for its vineyards and olive groves.

In a separate incident, a second wildfire is burning near Vilavenut, also in the province of Girona, affecting farmland. The combined impact on agriculture is expected to be significant, with crops and livestock at risk. This comes as Spain faces an increasingly severe wildfire season, with over 50,000 hectares already burned across the country this year, according to recent data.

The tramontana wind, a dry, northerly wind common in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, has been a key factor in the fire's rapid spread. Similar conditions have driven other recent fires in the region, including a 750-hectare blaze that confined 12,000 people earlier this season.

Regional and European Context

The Costa Brava wildfires are part of a broader pattern of extreme fire weather across southern Europe. In neighbouring France, a heatwave has triggered wildfires that forced the evacuation of 3,000 people in the south, while Portugal has mobilised over 1,000 firefighters to combat blazes fueled by high temperatures.

Climate scientists warn that rising temperatures and prolonged droughts are making Mediterranean ecosystems more flammable. The European Union's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service has reported that wildfire emissions in the region are above average for this time of year.

Local officials have praised the coordination between Catalan, Spanish, and EU emergency services, including the deployment of water-dropping aircraft from the European Civil Protection Pool. However, they stress that prevention and early intervention remain critical.

The arrested individual is expected to appear before a judge in Girona in the coming days. Meanwhile, firefighters continue to work through the night to establish containment lines, with the tramontana winds forecast to persist into the weekend.
