As the summer heat fades and the days grow shorter, many Europeans are already planning an autumn escape. Google searches for “October holiday” have surged to 80,000 in the past month, a 28% increase from the previous month. But where exactly are travellers heading?
Villa rental company Solmar Villas has analysed 105 destinations across Europe, weighing factors such as average temperatures, rainfall likelihood, and flight costs for October and November. The result is a ranking of the top ten spots for a warm autumn break, and it is clear that Cyprus is the standout choice.
Cyprus: the Mediterranean’s autumn champion
The island nation claims the first four positions, thanks to its reliably sunny weather, with temperatures typically ranging from 24°C to 29°C. Ayia Napa, known for its lively summer scene, takes the top spot. In autumn, visitors can enjoy a more relaxed side of the resort, with an average of just 2.3 wet days per month from September to November.
Limassol, ranked second, offers a blend of city and coast. Its nature trails, beaches, and status as a prime yacht destination make it ideal for those who want both urban amenities and seaside relaxation. Larnaca, in third place, is described as a “peaceful port city”, where the palm-lined Finikoudes promenade meets the sands of Finikoudes Beach.
Paphos, fourth, is a haven for history enthusiasts. Its Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains monuments and remains from the Roman era and the Middle Ages, including some of the finest floor mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Canary Islands: a near-guarantee of sunshine
For travellers who want to minimise the risk of rain, the Canary Islands are the go-to choice. According to the study, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, ranked sixth and seventh, offer average highs of around 26°C. Lanzarote boasts more than 150 kilometres of sandy beaches and turquoise waters, while Fuerteventura, a volcanic island, is known for its dramatic lava fields, rolling mountains, and rock formations.
“Whilst we can’t predict the weather, this data is as close as we can get to determining the best spots for the perfect autumn-sun holiday,” said Sharon Bradbury, Managing Director at Solmar Villas. “Cyprus seems to be a clear winner, but other locations on the list are also fantastic choices based on your personal preferences.”
Greece and Malta: culture and coast
The remaining spots on the list are shared between Greece and Malta. The Athens Riviera, ranked fifth, is a 70-kilometre stretch of beaches, coves, and waterfront dining. Rhodes, eighth, is home to one of the world’s best-preserved medieval towns, with its Old Town’s cobbled alleys and the historic Street of the Knights. Kos, ninth, offers mountainous settlements with panoramic views.
Malta rounds out the top ten. The archipelago’s largest island is a draw for film enthusiasts, having served as a backdrop for Game of Thrones. The cobblestoned streets of the old capital Mdina were used in the series, and the city’s bastions provide sweeping views across the island.
