Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton has accused Iran of outmaneuvering President Donald Trump in nuclear negotiations, claiming Tehran exploited Trump's eagerness to end the conflict. In an interview with Euronews, Bolton stated that Iran played Trump 'like a violin,' walking away with far better terms after sensing his desperation for a deal.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions over the interim agreement signed earlier this year, which reopened the Strait of Hormuz but left many European capitals uneasy. Bolton, a vocal hawk on Iran, argued that the deal weakens US leverage and emboldens Tehran's regional ambitions.

European Concerns Over the Iran Deal

European leaders, who have long sought a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear crisis, are now grappling with the implications of Bolton's claims. The agreement, which Trump signed to end the war and reopen the strait, has been criticized by some as a concession to Iranian pressure. The interim deal was initially hailed as a breakthrough, but Bolton's assessment suggests it may have been a strategic misstep.

In Brussels, EU foreign policy officials are monitoring the situation closely. The bloc has maintained its support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) framework, but the new US-Iran arrangement has created friction. European diplomats worry that a weakened US position could embolden Iran to expand its nuclear activities, undermining non-proliferation efforts.

Bolton's criticism also highlights divisions within the Trump administration. While the president has touted the deal as a victory, Bolton—who served as national security adviser until 2019—argues that Iran's negotiators were more skilled and patient. 'They knew he wanted a win,' Bolton said, 'and they gave him just enough to claim success while securing their own objectives.'

Impact on European Security

The fallout from the deal extends beyond nuclear issues. European security officials are concerned that Iran's strengthened position could destabilize the Middle East, affecting energy supplies and migration flows to Europe. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while economically beneficial, has not alleviated fears of Iranian proxy activities in Syria and Lebanon.

At the recent G7 summit in Évian, leaders urged Trump to address the Ukraine deadlock and regional security, but the Iran deal remained a contentious topic. The G7 communiqué called for a comprehensive approach to Iran, balancing economic incentives with strict monitoring.

Bolton's comments also resonate with European critics of the deal, who argue that it fails to address Iran's ballistic missile program or support for militant groups. 'This is not a sustainable peace,' said a senior EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'We need a framework that includes all aspects of Iran's behavior.'

The situation is further complicated by misinformation campaigns targeting both Trump and European leaders, which have eroded public trust in the negotiations. Analysts warn that such disinformation could undermine future diplomatic efforts.

As European capitals assess the deal's implications, the debate over Iran policy is likely to intensify. For now, Bolton's sharp critique serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of international diplomacy—and the risks of negotiating from a position of perceived weakness.
