Bonnie Tyler, the gravel-voiced Welsh singer who became a global pop icon in the 1980s with power ballads such as 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and 'Holding Out for a Hero', has died at the age of 75. She passed away unexpectedly in a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she had owned a home since 1988, following complications from emergency intestinal surgery.

Born Gaynor Hopkins on 8 June 1951 in Skewen, near Swansea, Tyler first rose to prominence in the late 1970s with hits like 'Lost in France' and 'It's a Heartache'. The latter, along with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', each sold more than six million copies worldwide, placing them among the best-selling singles of all time.

A career spanning five decades

Tyler's breakthrough came in 1983 with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', a dramatic, orchestral ballad written and produced by Jim Steinman. The song topped charts across Europe and North America, and its music video—featuring Tyler in a flowing white gown amid a gothic mansion—became a staple of MTV. A year later, she released 'Holding Out for a Hero', which gained further fame through its inclusion in the film Footloose.

Over the course of her career, Tyler released 18 studio albums, the last being The Best Is Yet to Come in 2021. She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the song 'Believe in Me', finishing 19th. In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music. At the ceremony, she said:

“I never ever thought I would have something like this, my mother and father would be so proud. To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.”

Final days in Portugal

Tyler began experiencing abdominal back pain in April and was rushed to hospital for emergency intestinal surgery. She suffered complications, including a serious infection, and was placed in an induced coma. Last month, her spokesperson confirmed she had emerged from the coma but remained “very unwell and in intensive care”. A statement on her official website today read: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”

Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. The couple had no children. Her death marks the end of an era for a singer whose distinctive rasp and emotional delivery made her one of the most recognisable voices in European pop music.
