Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, has been crowned Europe's best city break destination for 2027 in a fresh ranking released by European Best Destinations. The organisation, which compiles travel recommendations based on votes from its newsletter subscribers, praised the city for blending "ancient history, contemporary culture and the mountains" into what it calls an "especially rewarding combination".

The ranking, based on a 33-day poll involving 11,614 subscribers, saw each participant cast up to three votes from a shortlist of 64 destinations selected by independent travel journalists. The final top ten, listed in order of votes, reflects a diverse mix of urban experiences across the continent.

Top five: Sofia, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Cannes, Basel

Sofia, once known as Serdica and a key city in the Byzantine Empire, offers visitors a compact yet varied experience. According to the report, travellers can enjoy cultural discoveries, good food, and nightlife, while also having access to forest trails and mountain views within the same trip. Key attractions include the Saint George Rotunda, the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Square of Tolerance, and the Boyana Church, the city's only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lisbon, ranked second, was recently voted the world's happiest travel destination. The Portuguese capital suits travellers who appreciate both structure and spontaneity, the report suggests. It advises visitors to pick a neighbourhood to explore, book a dinner reservation, and "let the hills decide the route". Saving time for art, the historic centre, and lingering over meals is also recommended. Lisbon's appeal is further underscored by ongoing infrastructure developments, such as the new high-speed rail link between the capital and Porto, which promises to enhance connectivity.

Copenhagen, in third place, is described as a city that "makes a strong case for spending a weekend enjoying the everyday details of a city". The Danish capital is particularly appealing for friends and couples who enjoy design, neighbourhood restaurants, and cycling. The report suggests that a few carefully chosen stops can shape the day, with ample space for coffee breaks or waterside pauses.

Cannes, France, and Basel, Switzerland, complete the top five, offering their own distinct charms—Cannes with its glamorous Riviera setting and Basel with its rich cultural scene along the Rhine.

Places six to ten: Bristol, Leuven, Milan, Calpe, Verona

Bristol, the only UK entry, is known for its vibrant street art and maritime history. Leuven, a university town in Belgium, offers a blend of historic architecture and lively student energy. Milan, Italy's fashion and design capital, needs little introduction, while Calpe on Spain's Costa Blanca provides a coastal escape with its iconic Peñón de Ifach rock. Verona, the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, rounds out the list with its Roman arena and romantic atmosphere.

European Best Destinations emphasised that a great city break should offer plenty to do while leaving time to enjoy it. "There is room here for a romantic escape, a weekend with friends, a few days by the sea or a special occasion worth celebrating in style," the organisation said.

The list reflects a broader trend of travellers seeking diverse experiences, from cultural immersion to outdoor activities, often within a single trip. As Europe's cities continue to evolve, destinations like Sofia and Lisbon are gaining recognition not just for their historical significance but also for their modern vibrancy.
