An historic estate near the medieval village of Valbonne on the French Riviera has been put up for sale, and its past residents include one of Britain's most iconic pop bands. Domaine de La Sylviane, set within ten hectares of land and surrounded by more than 500 olive trees, served as a recording base for Duran Duran during the 1980s while they worked on their third album, Seven and the Ragged Tiger.
The property, which dates back to 1697, comprises 23 rooms in total, including 16 bedrooms, a gym, a pool house, a tennis court lined with fruit trees, and a garage for six cars. Its name honours the daughter of a general in Napoleon's army, and it has also been home to relatives of Prince Rainier III of Monaco before passing to its current owners.
A slice of Provençal heritage
The main residence, with six bedrooms, was originally built in the late 17th century. An adjoining three-storey cottage includes a self-contained two-bedroom apartment, while two further villas in the courtyard each offer two bedrooms. A caretaker's apartment sits at the entrance, ensuring the estate is well maintained.
Carlton International, the luxury real estate agency handling the sale, notes that the land was first settled in the 13th century and initially served as an agricultural hub run by monks. Philip Weiser, the agency's founder and CEO, emphasises the historical significance of the location: “Long before Cannes welcomed the world's cinema stars, before Cap d'Antibes became synonymous with grand estates and elegant hotels, the Riviera was a land of fishermen, monks, olive growers and hilltop villages whose rhythms followed the seasons rather than the summer holiday calendar.”
Weiser argues that estates like La Sylviane still define the character of Provence today, with the inland Riviera remaining one of the region's best-kept secrets. Instead of the sound of waves, visitors hear church bells; instead of waterfront villas, they find stone farmhouses and country lanes winding through ancient olive groves that have changed little over centuries.
“Luxury is measured not by visibility but by authenticity: the freedom to walk to the village bakery each morning,” he adds.
Beyond the coast
Valbonne sits inland from the Mediterranean, offering a quieter alternative to the glamour of Cannes or Saint-Tropez. The estate is about 20 minutes from Nice International Airport and 15 minutes from Cannes. Weiser describes the hidden Côte d'Azur as complementary to the coastal hotspots: “It complements them, offering an altogether different experience – one that reveals the enduring soul of Provence behind the glamour of the coast.”
The restored village centre features the Place des Arcades, where a Friday morning market brings the square to life. Nearby, the hilltop village of Mougins is celebrated as the gastronomic capital of the Riviera, with several Michelin-starred restaurants. The annual Étoiles de Mougins festival, founded in 2006 by culinary legends Paul Bocuse, Gaston Lenôtre, Alain Ducasse, Michel Guérard, and Pierre Troisgros, attracts chefs and food enthusiasts for demonstrations and competitions.
Other recommended villages include Biot, known for its glassmakers, and Grasse, described by Weiser as the “world capital for perfume,” where the same flowers have been cultivated for centuries to supply famous fragrance houses.
Within a 20-minute drive, residents can reach the beaches of Cannes, Antibes, or Juan-les-Pins, dine at Michelin-starred establishments, play on some of Europe's finest golf courses, or fly internationally from Nice. Yet, as Weiser notes, “at the end of the day, they return to the tranquillity of olive groves, forests and centuries-old stone houses.”
