Kanye West's scheduled performance at the Algarve Stadium in Portugal on 7 August will proceed as planned, according to event organizer Raya Culture, even as several other European shows have been canceled amid controversy over the rapper's past statements. The Portuguese government has stated it will take action if a risk assessment determines a threat to national security or public order.

Torcato Jorge, CEO and co-founder of Raya Culture, told Euronews Culture that the controversy is a "non-issue" fueled by "misinformation." He emphasized that the event complies with Portuguese law and that security services have not flagged West as a national threat. "The SIS did not identify the artist, or in this case the US citizen, as a national threat or a terrorist," Jorge said, adding that a state internal security report would be required to bar his entry.

West's European tour has faced significant disruption. The United Kingdom, now outside the EU, revoked his entry permit, leading to the cancellation of three Wireless festival shows in July. In France, West himself canceled a Marseille concert after the city's mayor declared him unwelcome. Poland and Switzerland also canceled performances, with Polish Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska condemning the rapper's past remarks.

Portugal, however, remains an outlier. Jorge noted that no EU member state has formally vetoed West's entry, and the organization is in constant contact with his team. "There's no fear whatsoever that he'll take the same stance as he did in France," he said, referring to the Marseille cancellation.

Government Stance and Security Protocols

Portugal's Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed it is "closely monitoring the situation" and will act if competent authorities conclude that West's visit poses a threat. The risk assessment falls under the SIRP (Portuguese Republic Information System), which provides daily security intelligence to the SIS (Security Information Service).

Jorge acknowledged that the issue has become "a political issue," but expressed confidence in the rule of law. Raya Culture has sent a communication to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, offering a meeting for clarification, though Jorge dismissed major concerns. "Civil Protection has just authorized our safety project for the venue, so everything is fine," he said.

The concert's viability also hinges on ticket sales. Jorge reported that the event is 70% sold out, with the first 20,000 tickets sold within two hours of pre-sale. However, domestic sales have slowed due to what he calls "speculative doubts with no legal basis." International demand, particularly from the US, UK, Spain, France, and Switzerland, is growing. Ticket prices range from €159 to €450.

Jorge defended West's place in the music industry, describing his anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi comments as "a mistake" that do not reflect his musical legacy. "For those who like music, entertainment and big productions, I think it's going to be a very interesting experience," he concluded.

The situation mirrors broader European debates about balancing free expression with public order. As Italy faces growing calls to cancel a Kanye West concert, Portugal's approach may set a precedent for how EU member states handle controversial artists.
