Noah Wyle, the actor who spent a decade in the emergency room on ER and now leads HBO Max's acclaimed medical drama The Pitt, has been named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2026. The 55-year-old, who also directs and produces, takes over the title from Jonathan Bailey, the Wicked and Jurassic World Rebirth star who made history last year as the first openly gay man to win the honor.
In his People interview, Wyle admitted he was stunned by the news. “I thought that sounded like a prank – just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me,” he said. “I hope this changes everything. I hope it’s just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out. [Laughs] No, I don’t, but I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure.”
Wyle also shared a few personal quirks: his biggest vice is his Instagram shopping habit, he hates being late, has an irrational fear of maggots, and claims to have “very, very fast hands.” Before anyone jumps to conclusions, he was referring to a secret talent for catching flies. Still impressive.
A career that keeps giving
Wyle first captured audiences as Dr. John Carter in ER, a role that made him a household name in the 1990s and early 2000s. More recently, he has earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in The Pitt, a series that has been praised for its gritty, realistic take on emergency medicine. His performance has already brought him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama, four Primetime Emmy Awards (including Outstanding Lead Actor in 2025 and 2026), and two Writers Guild of America Awards this year.
The show's third season is set to premiere in January 2027, and fans are eager to see what comes next for the character. Wyle's recent work has also sparked conversations about the state of healthcare, a topic that resonates across Europe as well. In fact, the continent is grappling with its own challenges in the sector, from AI-driven solutions to ease doctor shortages to innovative procedures like the frozen testicular tissue transplant in Edinburgh.
The Sexiest Man Alive title, first awarded in 1985 to Mel Gibson, marks its 41st year. Wyle joins a long list of past winners, including Patrick Dempsey, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Michael B. Jordan, John Legend, Idris Elba, George Clooney, and Harrison Ford. For many, the choice of Wyle is a nod to the enduring appeal of the “doctor” archetype, a figure of competence and compassion that transcends borders.
While the honor is largely a pop-culture milestone, it also highlights the global reach of American television. European viewers have long been devoted to shows like ER and The Pitt, and Wyle's recognition is likely to be celebrated from Lisbon to Warsaw. The actor's down-to-earth reaction, complete with self-deprecating humor, has endeared him to fans worldwide.
As Wyle prepares for the next season of The Pitt, he can also look forward to a year of good-natured teasing from friends and family. But for now, the title is his – and he seems ready to embrace it, even if he still can't quite believe it.
