As spring gives way to warmer weather, travellers across Europe are planning their summer getaways. Skyscanner has released its Smarter Summer Report, offering data-driven advice on when to book and where to go for the best value. The guide, aimed primarily at British holidaymakers, highlights key dates and destinations that balance cost with experience.
Optimal Travel Windows
According to Skyscanner's analysis, the cheapest week for summer travel in 2026 falls between 29 June and 5 July. The platform notes that Fridays are the most affordable day of the week to depart. “If you’ve ever muttered ‘maybe I’ll just wait and see’, this is your cue to stop waiting and start scrolling,” the company said. “Your ideal travel window might be closer (and cheaper) than you think.”
For those flexible with timing, June and September offer quieter alternatives. “June and September are summer’s quieter overachievers. You still get the sunshine, but with lower prices, shorter queues and a much easier shot at that dinner reservation. It’s the best of summer, with a bit more breathing room,” Skyscanner added.
Top European Destinations
Skyscanner's list of most popular destinations for British travellers is dominated by European cities. Málaga, the southern Spanish port city and birthplace of Pablo Picasso, takes the top spot. Average flight prices sit at £178 (€205), with accommodation starting around £200 (€231). The cheapest week to visit Málaga is 31 August to 6 September, with Tuesdays offering the lowest fares.
Faro, the capital of Portugal's Algarve region, ranks second. Flights average £193 (€223) and hotels £204 (€236). The same late-August window is recommended for budget-conscious travellers heading to Faro. Ibiza, just behind Bangkok and Orlando in the global rankings, places fifth, with flights at £181 (€209) and daily hotel costs at £316 (€365).
Other European cities in the top ten include Corfu (6th), Milan (7th), Rome (8th), Split in Croatia (9th), and Lisbon (10th). Spain also features prominently in Tripadvisor's Trending Destinations for Summer 2026, with Alicante, Playa de Palma in Majorca, Málaga, and Sitges ranking first, third, fourth, and seventh respectively among European trending spots.
Budget-Friendly Alternatives
For travellers watching their spending, Skyscanner identifies several affordable options. In June, Poprad in Slovakia offers average flight prices of just £55 (€64) from the UK. Other low-cost choices include Szczecin and Lublin in Poland, with tickets at £59 (€68) and £62 (€72) respectively.
September proves slightly cheaper overall. A flight to Poprad costs £54 (€62) on average. Dortmund in Germany comes in at £58 (€67), while Łódź and Szczecin in Poland are £65 (€75) and £69 (€80) respectively. These destinations provide a cost-effective way to enjoy summer weather without the crowds and high prices of peak season.
The report underscores that strategic planning can yield significant savings. Whether opting for the cheapest week in late June or exploring lesser-known cities in Poland and Slovakia, travellers can stretch their budgets further while still enjoying a European summer break.
