CD Tenerife has announced the death of striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda, who suffered a fatal injury during a second-division match against Andorra on Monday. The 30-year-old was involved in a collision with Andorra's goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, in the final minutes of the game at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The club issued a statement on Tuesday morning, saying: "From CD Tenerife, we announce the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 am, of Jesús de Miguel Alameda." The club described itself as "heartbroken" by the loss.

The incident occurred as de Miguel challenged for the ball in midfield during the closing stages of the match. Owono, who plays for Andorra, struck de Miguel in the chest. The player collapsed and was taken to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Initially, the club reported that he was "stable, despite the severity of his condition," but his condition deteriorated overnight.

The match, which was tied at 2-2, was suspended in the 108th minute as medical staff attended to de Miguel on the pitch. The referee halted play, and both teams were visibly shaken by the incident.

A career across Spanish football

De Miguel began his professional career with Leganés B in 2015 and went on to play for eight other clubs across Spain before joining Tenerife last year. He was known for his physical presence and dedication on the pitch, earning respect from teammates and opponents alike.

The news has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with tributes pouring in from clubs, players, and fans. The Spanish Football Federation and La Liga have expressed their condolences, and a minute's silence is expected at upcoming matches.

This tragedy comes amid a period of heightened attention to player safety in football, with repeated calls for better medical protocols and on-field emergency response. The incident also echoes other rare but devastating collisions in the sport, reminding players and officials of the inherent risks.

Andorra's goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, who was involved in the collision, has reportedly been receiving psychological support. The club and the league have not yet commented on whether an investigation will be launched into the circumstances of the incident.

De Miguel's death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for elite athletes. The football community in Spain and beyond is mourning the loss of a player who was in the prime of his career.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic event.
