US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner arrived in Doha on Tuesday to meet Qatari mediators, the Gulf state's foreign ministry confirmed. The visit marks the latest round of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions with Iran, following a weekend of military exchanges in the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari stated that the envoys are in Doha to discuss “all regional issues,” including negotiations with Iran and the situation in Lebanon. He clarified that the US officials are not in Qatar for direct talks with the Iranian side.

Tehran announced on Monday that it would send its own delegation to Qatar this week, but the Iranian foreign ministry stressed that it has not agreed to meet US representatives “at any level.” According to Iranian officials, the technical negotiators will focus exclusively on consultations with Qatari officials regarding the framework deal, with priorities including the release of frozen Iranian assets and the lifting of sanctions on oil exports.

President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had requested a meeting with US counterparts and that they planned to convene in Doha on Tuesday. He later tempered expectations, saying, “the meeting is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not. We will find out.”

Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The diplomatic push comes after four days of strikes in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which a fifth of the world's oil was shipped before the conflict began. Both sides appeared to pause attacks on Monday, but Iran has signaled it intends to assert control over the strait based on its own interpretation of the June 17 framework deal.

Witkoff, a real estate investor, has served as the administration's lead envoy on Middle East negotiations since the start of Trump's second term. He played a central role in the Gaza ceasefire talks and the US-Iran framework deal signed on 17 June. Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, has worked alongside him as a senior adviser on regional diplomacy, building on his role brokering the Abraham Accords during Trump's first term.

Any US-Iran talks in Qatar are expected to be conducted at a technical level. It remains unclear whether the two sides will meet face-to-face or indirectly through Qatari and Pakistani mediators in Doha. The urgency of the talks is underscored by the volatile situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran is digging in on its position.

This development comes amid broader regional tensions, including a eulogy at Khamenei's funeral that urged killing Trump, and Iran's foreign minister confirming that Israel targeted negotiators during US talks in Islamabad. The European Union and its member states, which have long sought a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, are watching these developments closely, as any escalation in the Gulf could have significant implications for European energy security and maritime trade.

The outcome of the Doha talks could shape the trajectory of US-Iran relations and influence the broader geopolitical landscape in the Middle East, with potential ripple effects for European allies and their interests in the region.
