A new analysis of nearly 100,000 visitor reviews has identified the tourist attractions most likely to leave travellers underwhelmed, with a British theme park taking the top spot for the second consecutive year. The study, conducted by luggage storage network Radical Storage, examined reviews of 200 major sights across 50 countries, filtering out attractions with fewer than 2,000 reviews and excluding sites in Russia, Ukraine, and Israel due to ongoing conflicts.
The research used 90 keywords—such as “boring,” “inaccessible,” and “overrated”—to gauge negative sentiment, discounting false positives like “not disappointing.” The average rate of negative reviews across all attractions was 5.2%, but several destinations far exceeded that threshold.
Alton Towers: A Repeat Offender
Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England, topped the list with 38.2% of reviews reporting a negative experience. Visitors cited crowding, poor value for money, and disappointing customer service. Specifically, 15% of reviews complained about value—more than ten times the study average of 1.3%. Many guests felt misled by ticket pricing, noting additional costs for food, drink, and access to different areas of the park. However, the park has improved since last year, when 49.4% of reviews were negative.
The United Kingdom and Canada tied as the countries with the most disappointing attractions overall, each with 7.9% negative reviews, followed by the United States at 7.5%. Among cities, Seattle (8.9%), Budapest (6.3%), and London and Bangkok (both 6%) had the highest shares of disappointing sights.
Budapest's Széchenyi Baths: A European Letdown
Budapest's Széchenyi Baths and Pool, the largest medicinal bath in Europe, ranked fourth globally with 16.6% negative reviews. Crowding and accessibility were the main complaints, mentioned in 7.2% of all reviews—well above the 2.1% average. The baths are a bucket-list destination for many, but the experience often falls short due to overcrowding, especially during peak tourist seasons. This finding comes as Budapest braces for major events like the Champions League final, which could further strain the city's tourism infrastructure.
Other European attractions in the top ten include Siam Park in Tenerife, Spain, with 13.4% negative reviews, and the Space Needle in Seattle, which also made the list. Six of the ten most disappointing attractions are in North America, highlighting a trend of high expectations clashing with reality in popular destinations.
The study underscores a broader issue: as tourism rebounds post-pandemic, iconic sites struggle to manage visitor numbers and maintain quality. For travellers seeking value, the findings suggest that even famous landmarks can disappoint—especially when crowds and costs outweigh the experience.
