Aman, the luxury hospitality group known for its discreet, design-led properties, has confirmed plans for its first resort in the Maldives. Named Amanolu, the project is set to welcome its first guests in 2028, marking a significant expansion for the brand in the Indian Ocean.
Situated in the secluded Vaavu Atoll, roughly a 40-minute seaplane ride from Velana International Airport, Amanolu will occupy three islands. The name blends the Sanskrit word for peace, aman, with olu, the local term for the water lily found throughout the region.
An island dedicated to wellness
The resort's centrepiece is a fully dedicated wellness island, a first for Aman. It will house an Aman Spa and the brand's signature Spa Houses, offering treatments and programmes that draw on both traditional and modern practices. Guests will also have access to a separate activity island for diving, snorkelling, and watersports, taking advantage of the atoll's pristine coral reefs.
The main island will feature 52 guest rooms and suites, designed by Kerry Hill Architects (KHA), the firm behind many of Aman's most celebrated properties. The architecture takes cues from the white coralline beaches, turquoise lagoons, and the untouched natural setting, with materials and layouts that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living.
Dining options will include several restaurants and bars, though the brand has yet to reveal specific concepts or chefs. Given Aman's track record in destinations like Tokyo and Venice, expectations are high for a culinary programme that emphasises local ingredients and Maldivian flavours.
Private residences on their own islands
The most ambitious element of Amanolu is the collection of 16 branded residences, each occupying its own private island. These homes are designed for ultimate seclusion, with some positioned to capture sunrise or sunset views, and others featuring beaches on both sides for uninterrupted panoramas throughout the day.
Each residence will offer five bedrooms, a private beach, a 25-metre swimming pool, and dedicated staff accommodation. This level of exclusivity is unprecedented in the Maldives, where even the most luxurious resorts typically share an island.
The announcement comes as the Maldives continues to attract high-end hospitality investment, with brands like Rosewood and Ritz-Carlton having recently opened properties. Aman's entry is expected to raise the bar further, particularly with its focus on wellness and privacy.
For European travellers, the Maldives remains a long-haul favourite, and Aman's reputation among European jet-setters is well established. The brand's European properties, from the Aman Venice to the Aman Le Mélézin in Courchevel, have set a standard that this new resort will aim to match.
While the Maldives faces challenges from climate change, with rising sea levels threatening low-lying atolls, the tourism industry remains a vital economic pillar.
