Italy’s foreign ministry announced on Monday that the bodies of four Italian divers who drowned during a cave diving expedition in the Maldives have been recovered. The accident occurred on Thursday in the Vaavu Atoll, where the group was exploring a cave system at a depth of approximately 50 metres—well beyond the recreational diving limit of 30 metres set by Maldivian authorities.

The search had been suspended after a Maldivian National Defence Force diver, Mohamed Mahudhee, died from decompression sickness after being evacuated to a hospital in the capital, Malé, on Saturday. His death underscored the extreme risks involved in the recovery mission, which had already claimed the life of one Italian diver—a diving instructor—whose body was found outside the cave earlier.

Finnish Experts Join the Search

On Sunday, three Finnish divers, specialists in deep and cave diving, arrived in the Maldives to help devise a new search strategy. They met with the Maldives coastguard to map out a plan to locate the remaining four divers, who were believed to be trapped inside the cave system. Rough weather had repeatedly hampered earlier rescue efforts, delaying the operation.

Initial teams had already dived to identify and mark the entrance to the cave system where the Italians disappeared. The cause of the deaths remains under investigation, but the depth and complexity of the cave are likely factors.

This tragedy follows a previous report that five Italian divers were believed to have died in the accident. The recovery of the bodies brings a somber conclusion to a week-long ordeal that has drawn attention to the dangers of deep cave diving in the Maldives, a popular destination for European tourists.

The incident has also highlighted the risks faced by local rescue personnel. The death of Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian National Defence Force, has prompted condolences from Italian officials and raised questions about the adequacy of safety protocols for such operations.

Italy’s foreign ministry has not yet released the names of the deceased divers, pending notification of their families. The ministry expressed gratitude to the Maldivian authorities and the Finnish experts for their assistance in the recovery effort.

For European travelers, this accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety limits when engaging in extreme sports abroad. The Maldives, known for its pristine waters and vibrant marine life, attracts thousands of European divers each year, but incidents like this underscore the need for rigorous training and caution.
