Some 500 kilometres off the coast of West Africa, the volcanic archipelago of Cabo Verde has long been a crossroads of cultures. This year, it steps onto a global stage as it qualifies for its first World Cup, but the nation offers far more than football. For European travellers seeking an Atlantic escape with distinct character, the islands reward exploration beyond the beaches.

When to Go and Which Island to Choose

Cabo Verde enjoys sunshine roughly 350 days a year, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 29°C. The climate splits into two seasons: tempo das brisas (the windy season, October to mid-July) and tempo das chuvas (the rainy season, August to September). January and February are the coolest months, with lows around 16°C, while September can peak above 36°C.

The archipelago comprises ten major islands, nine of which are inhabited, each shaped by Creole heritage. Sal, named for its salt flats, is a magnet for beach enthusiasts. Its Santa Maria Beach, one of the “Seven Wonders of Cabo Verde,” offers turquoise waters, white sands, and opportunities to spot dolphins, rays, and moray eels. Beyond the coast, Sal provides hiking trails, golf, horse riding, and cultural sites like the House of Culture Museum.

For a deeper cultural immersion, São Vicente stands out. Its capital, Mindelo, blends African, European, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences. The Centro Cultural do Mindelo offers guided tours in English, French, German, and Portuguese, with a six-hour island and culture tour starting at €130. Maio, by contrast, is ideal for quieter excursions. The tourism board recommends biking to explore its beaches, lagoons, and biosphere reserves, where visitors can observe turtles nesting with a guide.

Other islands include Santiago, Fogo, Santo Antão, Brava, Boa Vista, São Nicolau, and Santa Luzia. Each offers a different pace, from volcanic hikes on Fogo to the lush valleys of Santo Antão.

Atlantic Flavours and Cruise Connections

Cabo Verde’s cuisine reflects its maritime location. The national dish, cachupa, is a slow-cooked stew of meats (beef, chicken, tuna, sausages) and vegetables (maize, beans, cassava, carrots, cabbage, kale, pumpkin). Seafood is abundant: swordfish, grouper, horse mackerel, snapper, and salmon appear on menus, while adventurous diners can try octopus or grilled conch.

Cruise routes calling at São Vicente and Santiago ports link Cabo Verde with other African destinations, including Senegal and The Gambia. Lines such as Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises, and Princess include the islands in their itineraries.

Where to Stay

Travel specialist Jake Cardigan of Archipelago Choice recommends several accommodations. On São Vicente, Terra Lodge offers rooms with views of Mindelo Bay, starting at €85 per night, and is described as an “oasis of calm” without televisions. In Boa Vista, Orquidea Guesthouse, near Estoril Beach and Sal Rei, provides a tranquil base with a Cabo Verdean breakfast and resident parrots offering local tips. Other picks include Casa Cavoquinho in Santo Antão, Casa Marisa in Fogo, and Barcelo Praia in Santiago.

Getting There and Practical Notes

Four international airports serve the islands: Amílcar Cabral International Airport (Sal), Nelson Mandela International Airport (Santiago), Aristides Pereira International Airport (Boa Vista), and Cesária Évora Airport (São Vicente). Direct flights from European hubs like Lisbon, Paris, and Amsterdam are available.

For European travellers, Cabo Verde offers a blend of familiar Atlantic climate and distinct Creole culture, with each island providing a different experience. Whether you come for the World Cup or the year-round sun, the archipelago rewards those who venture beyond the postcard beaches.
