The 2026 edition of the World's 50 Best Bars has been unveiled, and Europe once again asserts its dominance in the global cocktail scene. Of the 50 venues honoured, 18 are European, cementing the continent's reputation as a hub for innovative mixology. The results were announced at a ceremony in Milan on Wednesday, with Hong Kong's Bar Leone retaining the coveted number one spot for a second consecutive year.

Europe's strong showing extends beyond the top 50: the extended list of venues ranked 51 to 100 includes a further 18 European bars, meaning the continent accounts for more than a third of all entries across the two lists. This year's ranking also marks a notable shift in the continent's internal balance, with Paris overtaking London as the best-represented European city.

Paris takes the lead

For the first time, Paris boasts four bars in the global top 50, placing it level with Hong Kong and New York as the cities with the most entries. The French capital's contingent is led by The Cambridge Public House at number 13, followed by Bar Nouveau at 15, newcomer De Vie at 23, and Danico at 26. This achievement comes amid a broader cultural renaissance in the city, which has also seen student protests and political debates over the past year, but the bar scene remains a bright spot.

London, while no longer the continent's top city, still delivers a strong performance. The Connaught Bar, a perennial favourite, ranks eighth, while Satan's Whiskers takes 29th and new entry Waltz lands at 32. The British capital's cocktail culture remains vibrant, even as Paris takes the spotlight.

Italy and Greece shine

Italy has plenty to celebrate. Milan's Moebius Milano climbed from seventh to second place, earning the title of Europe's best bar. Housed in a former textile factory, the venue combines cocktails, food, music, and design in a distinctly contemporary Milanese setting. Florence's Locale Firenze also makes the list at number 33, adding to Italy's presence.

Athens is another European standout, with three bars in the top 50. Line, which takes fifth place, is the second-highest-ranked European bar. Located in a former art gallery, it focuses on fermentation, with many ingredients made in-house. The Bar in Front of the Bar climbed 28 places to 19, earning the Nikka Highest Climber Award, while Barro Negro rounds out the Greek capital's entries at 40.

Spain also features prominently, with Barcelona's Sips at 16 and Paradiso at 17, and Madrid's Angelita making its debut at 50. Paradiso received the Rémy Martin Legend of the List Award, a testament to its enduring influence.

A global top five

The top five bars this year are geographically and stylistically diverse, offering something for every cocktail enthusiast. Bar Leone in Hong Kong, opened by Italian bartender Lorenzo Antinori in 2023, brings the charm of a Roman neighbourhood bar to Asia, focusing on classic Italian aperitivo. Moebius Milano in Milan offers a wide range of drinks in an industrial setting. Alquímico in Cartagena, Colombia, takes third place, making it the highest-ranked bar outside Europe and Asia, with a menu rooted in local ingredients. Bangkok's Bar Us, at fourth, offers a tasting-menu approach to cocktails, while Athens' Line rounds out the top five with its fermentation-driven creations.

For those planning a European bar crawl, the list offers plenty of inspiration. From the elegant lounges of London to the innovative venues of Paris, Milan, and Athens, the continent's cocktail culture is thriving. And with Slovenia's Štajerska topping a wine region ranking earlier this year, it's clear that Europe's beverage scene is as diverse as it is accomplished.

As the 50 Best Bars list continues to evolve, one thing is certain: Europe remains a powerhouse in the world of cocktails, and its bars are well worth seeking out.
