Europe's Digital Twin Ocean: AI and Satellites Create Virtual Replica to Safeguard Marine Ecosystems

The world's oceans are under unprecedented strain. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on World Oceans Day that humanity is pushing marine ecosystems past their limits. The third World Ocean Assessment, released alongside his remarks, paints a stark picture: sea levels are accelerating, ocean heat content has surged—16% of the increase since 1955 occurred after 2018—and Arctic sea ice continues its long-term decline.

In response, the European Union is betting on technology. The European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO), first unveiled in 2022 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, is a free, online virtual replica of the ocean. Developed by Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute, EDITO integrates high-resolution models of currents, waves, salinity, temperature, and marine biology. Users can explore interactive world maps to investigate everything from sea temperature to plastic pollution.

How AI Powers Ocean Scenarios

EDITO's core innovation lies in its ability to run 'what if' simulations. By altering initial conditions—such as a 2°C rise in sea temperature—users can model how fish populations might shift or whether seagrass meadows could mitigate coastal erosion. This is made possible by artificial intelligence, which processes vast datasets to generate realistic outcomes.

“With the AI-based model, we can change the initial condition of the ocean,” explained a Mercator representative. The platform also includes an AI chatbot, introduced during Digital Ocean Week in Brussels, that answers user queries about marine science. Mercator is exploring partnerships with major AI firms like ChatGPT to extend reliable ocean information to a broader audience. “It [AI] is going so fast, so fast that it's really frightening, but we need to be ready to adapt,” the representative added.

Satellites as Eyes on the Sea

Earth observation satellites are equally critical. EDITO primarily relies on data from Copernicus, the EU's space programme, which provides surface-level ocean information. This is supplemented by in-situ measurements from research vessels worldwide. “What we are doing currently is mainly to use data coming from European satellites,” the Mercator representative said. “But we can also integrate data coming from collaboration with the United States or India, or we have some information coming from Japan.”

On June 3, EDITO was incorporated into OceanEye, an EU initiative to advance ocean monitoring. The platform is slated to become fully operational by 2030, offering policymakers and scientists a powerful tool to assess the impact of climate change, pollution, and human activity on marine environments.

This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to leverage technology for environmental protection. For instance, the EU's climate talks in Bonn have faced challenges over access, but digital tools like EDITO demonstrate a commitment to data-driven solutions. Similarly, the use of AI in ocean monitoring echoes advances in other sectors, such as smart pipelines for energy infrastructure.

As the ocean's health deteriorates, Europe's digital twin offers a glimpse of how technology can inform conservation. Whether it can keep pace with the accelerating crisis remains an open question.
