Anyone who has ever stubbed a toe knows the drill: distract yourself, and the pain seems to fade. But new research from Israel suggests that the opposite approach—focusing intently on the injury—might actually change how the body responds at a physiological level, not just how it feels.
Scientists at Bar-Ilan University's Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, led by Dr. Liron Rozenkrantz, set out to test whether attention could influence the immune system's inflammatory response. Their findings, published in Nature Human Behaviour, indicate that where we direct our attention can indeed alter the body's physical reaction to a localized irritation.
Testing attention's impact on inflammation
The team conducted three pre-registered experiments. Participants received a histamine skin prick on their arm, which produced a small, temporary inflammatory reaction—redness and swelling. They were then instructed either to focus on the sensations at the affected area or to distract themselves with videos or tasks.
Over the next 20 minutes, researchers measured the size of the swelling and redness, as well as physiological markers. The results were striking: when participants focused on the inflamed area, the inflammatory response was about one-and-a-half times smaller than when they were distracted. In fact, around 90% of participants showed a stronger reaction when distracted.
“What was particularly striking was that directing attention toward the inflamed area changed not only what participants experienced, but the inflammatory response itself,” said Dr. Rozenkrantz. “This raises the possibility that our subjective experience of what is happening in the body is not only a passive process, but may be actively contributing to how physiological responses are regulated.”
Possible mechanisms: brain and vagus nerve
The researchers identified two potential pathways. First, attention appears to modulate how the brain processes sensory signals from the inflamed area. Second, focusing on bodily sensations was linked to increased activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, including the vagus nerve, which is known to help regulate inflammation.
Both pathways may work together, suggesting a more direct line of communication between the mind and the immune system than previously appreciated. This aligns with a growing body of research on the brain-gut axis and other mind-body connections.
Implications and limitations
The study was conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, focusing on a short-term inflammatory response to a histamine prick. It does not prove that attention can treat chronic inflammation, illness, or long-term health conditions. More research is needed to see whether similar effects occur in real-world scenarios and over extended periods.
Still, the findings add to the growing evidence that the brain and body are in constant two-way communication.
