Germany is currently grappling with a significant surge in mosquito populations, driven by a combination of high humidity and warm temperatures that create ideal breeding conditions. Doreen Werner, a mosquito expert at the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), notes that the weather has put mosquitoes "in their element," leading to a noticeable increase in their numbers across the country.

The common house mosquito, native to Germany, typically relies on standing water sources such as rain barrels and puddles for egg-laying. However, the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, which originates from tropical regions, is far more adaptable. It can breed in even the smallest amounts of water, such as those found in plant pot saucers or watering cans, allowing it to proliferate rapidly in densely populated urban areas like Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich.

Population Peaks and Disease Risks

Werner explains that the current weather pattern enables multiple mosquito generations to develop over a single summer, with populations peaking by the end of August. This results in more frequent bites during that period. In contrast, extreme dryness can limit mosquito numbers by reducing available breeding waters.

Researchers are particularly focused on the Asian tiger mosquito due to its potential to transmit pathogens such as dengue and chikungunya viruses. While no locally acquired transmission chains have been reported in Germany yet, the mosquito's presence is a growing concern. Chikungunya fever, though rarely fatal, can cause long-lasting health issues, including high fever and severe joint pain. Dengue fever can lead to life-threatening complications in severe cases.

According to reports from NTV, the Asian tiger mosquito has been primarily found in southwestern Germany, including cities like Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, and Mannheim. Experts predict it will continue spreading northward and become permanently established in regions such as the Middle Upper Rhine area. Many municipalities have set up online portals for residents to report sightings, aiding in monitoring and control efforts.

The Asian tiger mosquito is small, reaching only up to 0.9 centimeters, and is distinguished by its black-and-white markings, particularly on its abdomen and hind legs, as well as a white stripe from the back of its head to the base of its wings.

West Nile Virus and Other Threats

Native mosquitoes in Germany are also transmitting the West Nile virus, which has become established in Berlin, according to a study by the Charité hospital. The Robert Koch Institute reported 14 West Nile cases in Germany in 2025, down from 49 in 2024 and 16 in 2023, though these figures include infected travelers. Experts believe the actual number is higher, as many infections are asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they are typically flu-like, but severe cases can be fatal.

Both mosquito species can also act as vectors for parasitic roundworms, such as Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, which cause heartworm disease in animals and, rarely, in humans. Heartworm disease can lead to severe heart and lung damage in dogs, while Dirofilaria repens affects subcutaneous tissue, causing swellings.

For those seeking protection, coconut oil is sometimes mentioned as a natural repellent due to its lauric acid content, but its effectiveness against the Asian tiger mosquito is unproven. Experts recommend using repellents with proven active ingredients.

This mosquito surge comes amid broader environmental and health challenges in Germany, including ongoing debates over climate adaptation and public health infrastructure.
