The 2026 World Cruise Awards, held on 12 October at a gala ceremony in Jamaica, have crowned Norwegian Cruise Line as the world's best cruise line. The Norwegian operator edged out rivals including MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Silversea in the sixth edition of the awards.
While the top prize went to a US-based company, European operators and destinations featured prominently across the categories. Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, was the only European destination shortlisted for the world's best cruise destination, a title that ultimately went to Abu Dhabi. The UAE capital's win comes as some cruise lines have adjusted their 2026/27 itineraries to avoid Gulf ports amid ongoing regional instability.
For travellers with an eye on Patagonia, Australis was named the world's best expedition cruise line. In the river cruise segment, Pandaw—which operates across Asia, including India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar—took the global title, while Vietnam was recognised as the world's best river cruise destination.
Within Europe, DouroAzul, which sails the Douro River in Portugal, was named the best river cruise line, and Lisbon was selected as the best river cruise destination. The Portuguese city's historic centre, with its trams and hilltop viewpoints, continues to attract a growing number of river cruise passengers.
Top ships for dining, family, and romance
The awards also honour individual vessels across specialised categories. For food enthusiasts, Sun Princess was named the best cruise ship for dining. The vessel boasts seven specialty restaurants, including the American steakhouse Crown Grill, Sabatini's Italian Trattoria, and The Catch by Rudi, led by Rudi Sodamin, the cruise line's head of culinary arts. Other options include The Butcher's Block by Dario, featuring the work of eighth-generation Italian butcher Dario Cecchini, as well as Umai Teppanyaki, Makoto Ocean, and Umai Hot Pot.
Families travelling with children may want to look at Disney Wish, which took the award for best family cruise ship. The vessel offers live shows inspired by The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, restaurants themed around Frozen's Arendelle and the Marvel universe, plus water slides, sports courts, and a cinema. Adults can retreat to cocktail bars, a spa, and an infinity pool area reserved for grown-ups.
For couples, Celebrity Apex was named the world's best cruise ship for romance. Highlights include the adults-only Solarium pool, the cantilevered Magic Carpet platform for cocktails and live performances, and a casino for a bit of playful competition.
If you prefer a ship that keeps you entertained between ports, Utopia of the Seas offers five pools, three water slides, 21 restaurants, 23 bars (including a karaoke venue), two casinos, and a packed schedule of comedy and live music.
The awards come at a time when the cruise industry is navigating shifting geopolitics and environmental concerns. As European ports and operators adapt to new demands, the sector's resilience is evident. Meanwhile, a recent incident in the Ionian Sea highlighted the importance of safety at sea, as detailed in our report on a passenger rescued after 20 hours adrift.
As the industry looks ahead to 2026, the awards underscore a growing diversity in cruise offerings, from expedition voyages in Patagonia to river cruises along the Douro. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a first-timer, the choices are more varied than ever.
