A large-scale Russian attack involving ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least eight people and wounding 34 others, Ukrainian authorities reported on Monday. The assault, which was still ongoing in the early hours, targeted residential areas, causing a partial building collapse in the Podilskyi district and damaging several multistory buildings in the Darnytsia district.

“These are residential buildings. Places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, in a statement on Telegram. Rescuers worked through the night to search for survivors under the rubble, with at least one person still missing.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that air defense systems were active and urged residents to remain in shelters. The attack killed seven people in the capital and one in the Bucha district northwest of Kyiv, according to local officials. “There are no words that can ease this pain,” Tkachenko added.

Escalation in Long-Range Strikes

This was the second major assault on Kyiv and its surroundings in less than a week, underscoring the intensifying long-range warfare more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned hours earlier of an impending large-scale Russian attack on the city.

The strike comes as both sides increase their use of long-range weapons. Ukraine has recently targeted energy infrastructure inside Russia to weaken the Kremlin’s war effort, while also striking at Moscow-controlled territory in Ukraine that predates the 2022 invasion. The frontline has largely stalled in June, with Russian offensives losing momentum, but aerial attacks have intensified.

European allies have been urged to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems to Ukraine. In the wake of this deadly strike, Ukrainian officials renewed calls for faster support, emphasizing that civilian lives depend on it. The European Union has imposed sanctions on Russian scientists linked to the Navalny poisoning, but broader defense aid remains a point of contention among member states.

The attack also highlights the broader European security implications. As NATO prepares for its Ankara summit, the war in Ukraine remains a central issue, with member states debating how to balance deterrence with diplomatic engagement. Meanwhile, countries like Serbia continue to navigate their own balancing acts between EU integration and ties with Russia, as former Prime Minister Ana Brnabić recently stated.

In Kyiv, the mood was somber as residents emerged from shelters to assess the damage. The attack on residential areas, where people were sleeping, has drawn widespread condemnation. “There are no words that can ease this pain,” Tkachenko repeated, reflecting the grief of a city that has endured repeated bombardments.

The international community has condemned the strike, with calls for accountability. However, the war shows no signs of de-escalation, as both sides continue to develop and deploy longer-range capabilities. For now, Kyiv remains on high alert, with air raid sirens a near-daily reality for its citizens.
