San Sebastián, the elegant Basque coastal city known for its film festival and Michelin-starred pintxos bars, has added a new cultural landmark to its roster. The Palacio Bellas Artes, a Beaux Arts building dating from 1914 that once housed one of Spain's earliest cinemas, has been meticulously restored and transformed into an 81-room hotel.

The project, led by architect Ignacio Quemada, involved reconstructing the building's iconic dome and refurbishing the façade while preserving many of the original decorative elements. The result is a seamless blend of early 20th-century grandeur and contemporary comfort, now operating under Hilton's Curio Collection.

Cinematic Heritage Meets Basque Design

Guests enter the Hotel Palacio Bellas Artes San Sebastián through the former stage, passing under the proscenium arch that once framed silent films and later talkies. The accommodation categories pay homage to the building's theatrical past: gallery, amphitheatre, and grand stalls rooms, along with front and corner box suites. Each of the 81 guest rooms features a unique artwork by Basque artist Lander Andonegi, who created a site-specific collection inspired by cinema.

“Palacio Bellas Artes is a celebration of San Sebastián’s cultural identity, bringing together cinematic heritage, thoughtful design and timeless gastronomy,” said Jenna Hackett, senior vice president and global category leader of lifestyle brand management at Hilton.

The hotel's main restaurant, Lotu, occupies the theatre's former box over two floors. Its name, meaning “to tie” or “to connect” in Basque, references the great dining rooms of the early 20th century where actors, writers, and filmmakers would gather. The culinary offering focuses on local ingredients and Basque traditions, reinforcing the property's connection to its surroundings.

San Sebastián has long been a destination for cinephiles, hosting the prestigious San Sebastián International Film Festival each September. The city's cinematic history now has a permanent home in the Palacio Bellas Artes, which joins a growing trend of heritage conversions across Europe. For travelers seeking a stay that combines cultural depth with modern luxury, this hotel offers a distinctive experience.

For those interested in broader Spanish developments, the country continues to make headlines in energy and finance. Spain's solar boom has drawn investor attention despite market volatility, while the government has proposed an €850 billion EU joint borrowing plan to address geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, a devastating wildfire in Almería has claimed at least 12 lives, underscoring the environmental challenges facing the Iberian Peninsula.

Hotel Palacio Bellas Artes San Sebastián, Curio Collection by Hilton, is now open for bookings. Rates start at approximately €250 per night, depending on season and room category.
