Choosing a beach holiday often comes down to more than just sun and sand. A quiet cove with a good book is a very different experience from a lively stretch with watersports and beach clubs. Skyscanner's new interactive tool, the Paradise Guide, aims to match travellers with the right kind of coastal escape, taking into account not only budget and travel time but also the atmosphere they're after.

The tool, available on Skyscanner's website, lets users select their intended travel month and then define their "ideal beach vibe" – options range from "quiet and relaxed" to "lively and social", "family friendly", and "adventurous". From there, you can prioritise amenities such as sun loungers, lifeguards, bars and restaurants, or watersports. You then specify your departure airport, whether you prefer short or long haul (or have no preference), and how long you're willing to travel from the airport. Finally, you set your budget, and the guide presents a curated list of beaches with details on the best months to visit, average temperatures, and flight durations.

To mark the launch, Skyscanner also released its own rankings of popular beaches in the UK and worldwide, based on factors like reviews, search data, and facilities. Here are some of the standout picks.

Britain's best beaches

While the UK might not be the first destination that springs to mind for a beach holiday, its coastline offers remarkable variety – from vast, unspoiled sands to hidden coves. Skyscanner's analysis, which considered average air and sea temperatures, sun lounger availability, and traveller reviews, produced a top three.

On the south coast of England, Sandbanks Beach in Dorset is known for its gently sloping, clean sands, ideal for swimming, watersports, and families. The beach has held Blue Flag status for years thanks to its excellent water quality and facilities. With an average peak-season temperature of 20.8°C and a Tripadvisor rating of 4.6, it's also conveniently located just 25 minutes from Bournemouth Airport.

Further east, Botany Bay in Kent stands out for its striking white chalk cliffs and golden sands. At low tide, rock pools and shallow pools are revealed, perfect for exploring, while walkers can follow part of the Viking Coastal Trail for panoramic views. Peak-season temperatures average 20.3°C, and the sea reaches a surprisingly warm 22.5°C, making it one of England's best spots for a dip. It also holds a solid 4.6 Tripadvisor rating.

In Scotland, St Andrews West Sands offers a two-mile stretch of golden sand backed by rolling dunes, just a short walk from the town centre. Famous for its role in the opening scene of Chariots of Fire, it's now a popular spot for long walks, beach games, and coastal views. It has a 4.7 Tripadvisor rating, though temperatures are cooler, averaging 15.8°C in peak season. A nearby boardwalk makes it easy to explore the dunes and coastline.

World's most talked-about beaches

Some beaches are popular for good reason. Skyscanner analysed reviews, search data, and ratings to identify the beaches travellers are searching for and discussing most around the globe.

Palm Beach in Oranjestad, Aruba, is a classic Caribbean escape with warm seas, year-round sunshine, and plenty of restaurants, beach bars, and watersports nearby. It attracts more than half a million global Google searches a month, proving its appeal extends far beyond postcard views.

La Jolla Cove in California offers something more unusual than a typical beach, with rugged coastline, clear emerald waters, and abundant marine life. Close to San Diego, it's a favourite for snorkelling, kayaking, and spotting sea lions. Its 4.6 Tripadvisor rating from nearly 14,000 reviews underscores its popularity.

Siesta Key Beach in Florida is known for its powdery white sand and turquoise water. It scores a very respectable 4.7 on Tripadvisor and attracts around 135,000 Google searches each month, offering watersports, restaurants, and plenty of space to relax.

Underrated gems

For travellers who prefer well-reviewed but less crowded spots, Skyscanner also highlighted some underrated beaches.

Embleton Bay in Northumberland, UK, is backed by dunes and overlooked by the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. It's a wild stretch of golden sand that feels a world away from busier resorts. The best time to visit is between June and September for sunshine and coastal walks.

Rendezvous Bay on the Caribbean island of Montserrat is only accessible by boat or on foot, making the journey part of the adventure. Once there, you'll find white sand, clear blue water, and none of the usual crowds – just a peaceful slice of coastline.

As beach tourism continues to evolve, tools like this reflect a growing desire for personalised travel planning. Whether you're after a family-friendly stretch in Spain or a remote cove in the Caribbean, the Paradise Guide aims to take the guesswork out of choosing your next seaside escape.
