When Dolores O'Riordan was seventeen, a first kiss on a dance floor in Limerick sparked a song that would define a decade. The late Cranberries frontwoman later recalled how that moment—and the public rejection that followed—inspired the lyrics to 'Linger', a track that has now outlived its era and found a new audience on TikTok, where it has been used over 240,000 times.
'Until then, I'd always thought that putting tongues in mouths was disgusting, but when he gave me my first proper kiss, I did indeed "have to let it linger",' O'Riordan told The Irish Times. 'I couldn't wait to see him again. But at the next disco, he walked straight past me and asked my friend to dance. I was devastated. Everyone saw me being dumped, publicly, at the disco. Everything's so dramatic when you're 17, so I poured it into the song.'
Why 'Linger' Still Resonates
The song's resurgence is part of a broader wave of 90s nostalgia sweeping across Europe and beyond. From Oasis's sold-out reunion tour to streaming spikes for hits like 'Iris' and 'No Scrubs', younger generations are reaching for the sounds of a pre-internet era. For many, the 90s represent a simpler time—before social media and artificial intelligence dominated daily life. 'Linger', with its tender reflections on unrequited love, speaks directly to those navigating today's dating landscape of situationships and ghosting. Sometimes, the best way to cope is romanticising it all with a song—and reminding ourselves that heartbreak is timeless, even if it feels more complicated now.
The track has also appeared in popular TV shows like Love Story and The Summer I Turned Pretty, often used to underscore the fragile yearnings of young love. Mexican singer Bratty recently released a Spanglish remix, adding to a growing list of reinterpretations that keep the song fresh.
The Band Behind the Hit
The Cranberries formed in Limerick in 1989 and released their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, in 1993. 'Linger' was the first song they wrote for that album. After a re-release in 1994, it topped global charts and became a staple of alt-rock. The band went on to produce eight studio albums, with hits including 'Zombie', 'Dreams', and 'Salvation'. They disbanded in 2018 following O'Riordan's death at age 46.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of their third album, To the Faithful Departed. The band recently uploaded unreleased scenes from the original 'Linger' music video, further fuelling interest. Their dreamlike sound—infused with Celtic wistfulness and O'Riordan's haunting vocals—remains unparalleled, though it continues to inspire artists such as Beach House, Florence + The Machine, and Taylor Swift, whose singles 'August' and 'Beautiful Eyes' echo that same ethereal melancholy.
