For travelers seeking genuine culinary experiences, navigating tourist-heavy cities can be a minefield of overpriced, mediocre meals. A new index from short-term rental platform Holidu aims to cut through the noise, ranking European cities by the number of Michelin-approved "Eat Like a Local" restaurants. The results reveal a landscape where tradition and street food are increasingly prized over formal fine dining.

Venice tops the ranking with 18 such restaurants, a testament to its enduring culinary heritage. The city's lagoon has also seen a resurgence of flamingos in recent years, thanks to ecological restoration efforts, adding a natural spectacle to the dining experience. Istanbul, Marseille, and Nice share second place, each with 10 restaurants.

Istanbul Edges Out Paris in Culinary Shift

Perhaps the most striking finding is Istanbul's rise to fourth place overall, pushing Paris to fifth. "It signals a massive shift in what travellers want — moving away from formal fine dining and toward rich, street-level food heritage," a spokesperson for Holidu told Europe in Motion. This trend underscores a broader European appetite for authentic, accessible cuisine over Michelin-starred formality.

The index also highlights the growing importance of hands-on culinary experiences. Rome leads in cooking classes with over 300, offering visitors the chance to master classics like carbonara, cacio e pepe, or fried zucchini flowers. Florence follows with 250 classes, and Paris rounds out the top three with 135. For those preferring guided exploration, Florence offers 129 food tours, Paris 123, and Rome 112, with Istanbul and Barcelona each providing more than 60.

Eastern Europe and Regional Hubs Rise

Eastern European cities and smaller regional hubs are quietly outperforming traditional culinary capitals. Budapest cracked the top 10, and Zagreb made the top 15, surpassing Lisbon and Vienna in authentic food scenes. The index also reveals sibling rivalries: Munich beats Berlin, Kraków tops Warsaw, and Geneva outpaces Bern. This suggests that travelers are increasingly seeking out less obvious destinations for genuine local flavors.

For those planning a comprehensive culinary itinerary, the overall top 100 food cities ranking considers the breadth of local and national offerings. While Paris retains its glamour, the data shows a clear pivot toward street-level heritage. This aligns with broader travel trends: according to American Express's Global Travel Trends Report, over 80% of travelers say trying local cuisine is the part of the trip they look forward to most. A separate study by GetYourGuide claims 68% of travelers eat more on holiday than at home, with 12% consuming at least five meals a day while away.

As the continent's culinary landscape evolves, cities like Venice, Istanbul, and Zagreb are proving that authenticity often lies beyond the tourist trail. For travelers, the message is clear: eat where the locals eat, and you'll taste the real Europe.
