France has recorded approximately 1,000 more deaths than expected since Wednesday, as an intense heatwave continues to strain the country's healthcare system. Public Health France reported on Sunday that the unconsolidated figures show a significant spike in mortality since June 24, with the most affected areas under red heat alerts.

The hardest-hit regions include Île-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Normandy, and Pays de la Loire. The agency noted that 85% of the excess deaths involved people aged 65 or older, highlighting the particular vulnerability of elderly populations during extreme heat events.

Emergency Services Under Pressure

Parts of France have seen temperatures exceed 40°C this week, leading to a surge in emergency callouts and putting hospitals and first responders under immense strain. More than thirty departments were under a red heat alert for much of the week, and on Wednesday the country recorded its hottest-ever day, with the average 24-hour temperature reaching 30°C.

In Paris, authorities banned the consumption of alcohol in public over the weekend to reduce pressure on emergency services. The city's Pride March, originally scheduled for Saturday, was also postponed. The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum have been closing early due to the extreme heat.

Residents have been flocking to parks and canals across the capital to escape the scorching conditions, but authorities have warned of the dangers of unsupervised swimming. A man drowned in the Canal Saint-Martin on Friday night, prompting a reminder from Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire: "We've said it before and we'll say it again: swimming outside the times when supervised swimming is permitted, and outside the supervised areas, is dangerous."

Tragically, Ligue 2 footballer Kenzo Kies also died after reportedly drowning in the Rhône River during the heatwave. His club, Guingamp, expressed its sorrow in a statement, offering condolences to his family and loved ones.

Broader European Context

The heatwave has not been confined to France. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day on Friday, with the village of Santon Downham in Suffolk reaching 37.3°C, according to provisional data from the Met Office. Across the continent, similar extreme temperatures have been observed, with scientists linking the event to climate change. As reported in Europe's Heatwave 'Virtually Impossible' Without Climate Change, Scientists Say, such conditions are becoming more frequent and intense.

In Spain, the heatwave has also taken a heavy toll, with 327 heat-related deaths recorded in under a week. The situation underscores the urgent need for adaptation measures across Europe, from improved early warning systems to infrastructure investments. For instance, EDF Invests €80 Million to Cool French Schools Amid Intensifying Heatwaves, a step that reflects growing awareness of the need to protect vulnerable populations.

As the heatwave shifts eastward, hospitals in Eastern Europe are also becoming overwhelmed, as detailed in Eastern Europe's Hospitals Overwhelmed as Heatwave Shifts Continent-Wide. The continent-wide nature of this event highlights the interconnected challenges posed by extreme weather.

Public Health France continues to monitor the situation, and authorities urge citizens to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and check on elderly neighbors. The coming days will be critical as temperatures are expected to remain high across much of the country.
