Greece's tourism sector has posted a robust performance in the first four months of 2026, with travel receipts and visitor numbers climbing sharply compared to the same period in 2025. The data, released by the Bank of Greece, underscores the country's continued appeal as a Mediterranean destination and provides a significant boost to its services-driven economy.

From January to April 2026, travel receipts reached €2.79 billion, an increase of 36.9% or €752.9 million over the previous year. Travel payments, which include spending by Greek residents abroad, rose by 14% to €1.13 billion, resulting in a travel balance surplus of €1.66 billion—up more than 58% from €1.05 billion in early 2025.

In April alone, the travel balance surplus stood at €735.9 million, compared to €697.3 million in April 2025. Receipts for the month rose by 9.5% to €1.11 billion, driven by a 10.6% increase in inbound traffic, even as average spending per trip dipped slightly by 1%.

Arrivals Surge Across All Entry Points

Total inbound travel reached 5.24 million visitors in the four-month period, up 27.1% from 4.12 million a year earlier. The growth was particularly pronounced at land border crossings, which saw a 67.8% increase, while air traffic rose by 12.8%. This suggests a strong recovery in overland travel from neighbouring Balkan countries, as well as from central and eastern Europe.

Receipts from EU member states increased by 38.7% to €1.37 billion, while those from non-EU countries rose by 37.5% to €1.34 billion. Arrivals from EU countries grew by 36.1%, compared to 18.3% from the rest of the world, highlighting the importance of intra-European travel to Greece's tourism economy.

Key Source Markets: Italy, UK, France Lead

Among individual markets, Italy stood out with a 57.5% jump in revenues and a 21.6% rise in arrivals over the four-month period. The United Kingdom also delivered a strong performance, with travel receipts reaching €331.7 million and visitor numbers up 51%. France posted more modest but still positive gains, with revenues up 12.6% and arrivals up 14.1%.

The figures confirm a strong start to the 2026 tourism season, with double-digit growth in both arrivals and revenues. This momentum is expected to continue through the summer months, providing a vital contribution to Greece's current account balance and overall economic growth.

Greece's tourism sector has been investing in innovation to enhance the visitor experience. For instance, the Andros AI tour guide is transforming how tourists explore the Cycladic island, offering personalised recommendations and historical insights. Meanwhile, the PosoKanei app helps visitors compare supermarket prices in real time, a tool that can be particularly useful for longer stays.

The strong early-season performance also comes amid broader European travel trends. While destinations like Venice are considering measures to manage overtourism, Greece is benefiting from its diverse offerings—from the historical sites of Athens and the Parthenon, whose west façade was recently unveiled after two centuries of scaffolding, to the islands and coastal resorts that draw millions each year.

With the summer peak still ahead, Greek tourism authorities remain cautiously optimistic. The sector's resilience and adaptability, supported by digital tools and targeted marketing, suggest that 2026 could be another record-breaking year for one of Europe's most popular travel destinations.
