Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has called for the destruction of Lebanon after the Israeli military confirmed the deaths of four soldiers in southern Lebanon. In a post on X, Ben-Gvir wrote: 'For every tear of an Israeli mother, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep.' He added that 'all of Lebanon must burn.'

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the soldiers were killed 'in combat' when their tank was struck during an operation near the village of Kfar Tebnit. One of the victims has been identified as 32-year-old Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, commander of the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade.

Escalation Amid Diplomatic Efforts

The incident comes just days after the United States and Iran signed an initial agreement aimed at ending the Iran war. Under the provisional deal, both sides and their allies are required to suspend all military activities, including operations in Lebanon. The agreement has raised hopes for a broader de-escalation in the region, but Ben-Gvir's remarks threaten to undermine those efforts.

'With all due respect to the Americans, Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not forfeit,' Ben-Gvir wrote in his post on Friday. His comments have drawn sharp criticism from European diplomats, who fear they could derail the fragile diplomatic process. The European Union has consistently called for restraint and adherence to international law in the conflict.

Ben-Gvir, a far-right figure in Israel's coalition government, has a history of inflammatory rhetoric. In May, he sparked controversy by posting video footage of himself taunting detained activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, who had been attempting to transport aid to Gaza. The video showed Ben-Gvir berating the detainees and waving a large Israeli flag as they were forced to kneel with their hands tied behind their backs. 'Welcome to Israel, we are the landlords,' he said in the footage.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains volatile. Israeli strikes on the region have continued even as the US-Iran deal nears finalization. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has warned that a quick peace between Israel and Hezbollah is unlikely without genuine political will from both sides. UNIFIL's deputy recently stated that sustainable peace requires a commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon.

European capitals are closely monitoring the developments. The EU has imposed sanctions on individuals and entities involved in violence in the region, and there is growing pressure from member states to curb trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. A recent rally in Brussels pressed the EU to take stronger action, while a fact-check by European Pulse examined the legal basis for such measures.

Ben-Gvir's latest remarks risk further inflaming tensions at a critical juncture. The US-Iran deal, if implemented, could pave the way for a broader ceasefire, but hardliners on both sides remain opposed. For Europe, the stakes are high: instability in the Middle East has direct consequences for migration, energy security, and counterterrorism efforts across the continent.

As the situation evolves, European leaders are urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the US-Iran agreement can hold and whether Ben-Gvir's incendiary words translate into action on the ground.
