As a heatwave grips much of Europe, the Italian Riviera is drawing increasing attention from travellers seeking a sophisticated coastal retreat. Data from tour operator Citalia reveals that online searches for "Italian Riviera towns" have jumped by more than 5,000% in the past month, while interest in "things to do in Cinque Terre" has doubled. Stretching from the French border to northern Tuscany, the Ligurian coast combines colourful fishing villages, glamorous resorts, UNESCO-listed heritage, and more Blue Flag beaches than any other Italian region.

Sanremo: Belle Époque Elegance

Long regarded as one of the Riviera's most refined destinations, Sanremo is known for its palm-lined promenades, grand Belle Époque architecture, and historic casino. Visitors can stroll along Corso Imperatrice, enjoy seafood lunches at the marina, or explore the medieval alleyways of La Pigna. Heather Green, Head of Product at Citalia, notes: “Sanremo feels effortlessly sophisticated. One of my favourite things to do is venture into La Pigna in the early evening, where you’ll discover panoramic viewpoints and tucked-away local restaurants that many visitors miss entirely.”

Genoa: A Port City with Renaissance Grandeur

The regional capital offers a different perspective, blending Renaissance palaces with one of Italy's most important historic ports. The UNESCO-listed Via Garibaldi, bustling piazzas, and the birthplace of pesto make Genoa a cultural hub. Green suggests stepping beyond the main squares into the narrow caruggi alleyways, home to hidden bakeries, traditional wine bars, and characterful trattorias that reveal the city's authentic side.

Rapallo and Portofino: Glamour on the Coast

Rapallo serves as an ideal base for exploring the glamorous coastline around Portofino, where luxury yachts, designer boutiques, and pastel-coloured waterfront buildings have made the harbour one of Italy's most recognisable destinations. Portofino's cinematic scenery even appeared in The Wolf of Wall Street, reinforcing its reputation as an exclusive seaside escape. Green recommends arriving by boat to fully appreciate the dramatic approach into the harbour.

Santa Margherita and Camogli: Romantic Retreats

With elegant seafront villas, Blue Flag beaches, and scenic walking trails towards Portofino, Santa Margherita is one of Liguria's most romantic spots. For a quieter evening, Green recommends taking the short train ride to nearby Camogli, a traditional fishing village whose colourful waterfront and maritime history make it one of the Riviera's most atmospheric dinner spots after sunset. For those seeking further luxury, the region has seen a surge in high-end offerings, as Hyatt, IHG, and Dior Spa expand luxury offerings across Italy.

Portovenere: Overlooked Gem

Often overshadowed by neighbouring Cinque Terre, Portovenere rewards visitors with dramatic cliffs, pastel-coloured harbour houses, and sweeping views across the Gulf of Poets. Explore the Church of St Peter, visit Doria Castle, or take a boat trip along the UNESCO-protected coastline. Green suggests climbing towards the castle in the late afternoon when the coastline is bathed in golden light.

Cinque Terre: Iconic Coastal Villages

Comprising Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre remains one of Europe's most photographed coastal landscapes. The colourful villages inspired Pixar's Luca, introducing the region's nostalgic seaside charm to a global audience. For those planning a summer trip, the region's clean waters are among Europe's cleanest lakes for safe summer swimming, though the Riviera's beaches offer their own pristine appeal.

Whether you choose the elegance of Sanremo, the glamour of Portofino, or the timeless beauty of Cinque Terre, Liguria's luxury coastal escapes promise a blend of culture, cuisine, and Mediterranean charm that few destinations can match.
