Kylian Mbappé, the French striker for Real Madrid, is facing mounting criticism from the club's supporters after being photographed on a yacht in Sardinia while recovering from a hamstring injury. The trip, taken with actress Ester Expósito, comes just days before Sunday's Clásico against Barcelona, one of the most anticipated fixtures in Spanish football.
The backlash has been amplified by an online petition calling for Mbappé's departure from the club. Initially targeting 200,000 signatures, the campaign has surged to nearly 30 million, though the authenticity of many signatories remains unverified. The petition urges fans to “make their voices heard” and states: “If you believe change is necessary, do not remain silent: sign this petition and defend what you believe is best for the future of the club.”
Recovery or Relaxation?
Mbappé, 27, has been sidelined with a left hamstring issue, casting doubt on his availability for the Clásico at Camp Nou. Spanish media have questioned whether the holiday reflects a lack of commitment to his rehabilitation. Photos of Mbappé aboard a yacht emerged while Real Madrid were playing Espanyol, further fueling fan discontent.
In response, Mbappé's representatives issued a statement to The Associated Press, denying any wrongdoing. “Part of the criticism is based on an overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, without reflecting the reality of Kylian’s commitment and the work he puts in every day for the team,” the statement read. It added that “in his free time, Mbappé can do whatever he wants.”
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa echoed this sentiment, saying: “Each player does what they consider appropriate in their free time.”
Context of the Season
Real Madrid's season is winding down with little at stake. The club has been eliminated from the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, and trails Barcelona by 11 points in La Liga with only four matches remaining. Barcelona could clinch the title on Sunday. Some fans suspect Mbappé is saving himself for the upcoming World Cup, which begins in five weeks.
This is not the first time Mbappé has faced scrutiny over injuries. Earlier this season, he drew criticism when unable to play due to a knee ailment. Since joining Real Madrid, he has scored 85 goals in 100 appearances, but his off-field choices are now testing fan patience.
Madrid has not confirmed whether Mbappé will be fit for the Clásico. Spanish media report that he visited the club's training centre on a day off to continue his recovery. The controversy adds another layer to a season that has seen the club struggle to meet expectations, a challenge that resonates beyond football into broader discussions about athlete commitment and club culture in Europe.
