A fire that erupted early Thursday morning in a residential building in the tourist hub of Magaluf, on the Spanish island of Mallorca, has left two people dead and several others injured, local authorities confirmed.
The blaze began around 5 a.m. on the third floor of a building in the Calvià municipality, according to Spain's Civil Guard. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have cordoned off the floor where it started, as well as the levels directly above and below.
Residents attempted to extinguish the flames themselves but were unsuccessful as the fire spread to other parts of the building, particularly toward the upper floors. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control roughly two hours later.
Victims and Hospitalizations
The Civil Guard identified one of the deceased as a 58-year-old Argentine citizen. The second victim, a woman, has not yet been identified. Both were found in separate apartments. Four people remain hospitalized, though authorities have not disclosed the severity of their injuries. Approximately 20 residents were affected by the fire, and nearby hotels have been arranged to provide temporary housing for those displaced.
Magaluf, located about 22 kilometres west of Palma de Mallorca, is a well-known destination for beach holidays and nightlife, particularly popular among young British and German tourists. The incident underscores the vulnerabilities of densely populated tourist areas, where older building stock can pose fire risks. In Spain, homeownership costs have soared, putting pressure on housing maintenance and safety standards across the country.
The local government in Calvià has pledged support for the affected residents and is coordinating with emergency services to ensure their needs are met. The investigation into the fire's origin continues.
