A suspected deliberate vehicle ramming in the eastern German city of Leipzig has left two people dead and three others in critical condition, authorities confirmed on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 5 pm local time in the city's central pedestrianised shopping district, a bustling area frequented by locals and tourists alike.

The driver, identified as a 33-year-old German citizen born in the Leipzig region, was detained at the scene inside his vehicle. Police chief René Demmler stated that the man is being investigated on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. An unspecified number of additional individuals sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Investigation Underway

Saxony's interior minister, Armin Schuster, told reporters that investigators believe the suspect acted alone. While noting that rage and psychological instability are often factors in such cases, Schuster cautioned against speculation. “We will not jump to conclusions,” he said, emphasising that the investigation is in its early stages.

According to Demmler, the driver entered the pedestrian zone from Augustusplatz, a major square, and drove along Grimmaische Strasse before coming to a halt. Police have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Saxony state governor Michael Kretschmer expressed his condolences to the victims' families. “An act like this leaves us speechless, and it makes us determined,” he said, as reported by German news agency dpa. “We will do everything in our power to solve this case quickly and completely.”

Images from the scene show a car with a heavily damaged front end and a shattered windshield, surrounded by emergency responders. The area was cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams gathered evidence.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Leipzig, a city of roughly 600,000 residents known for its cultural scene and peaceful protests that helped bring down the East German regime in 1989. The incident comes amid broader concerns about public safety in German cities, though such deliberate rammings remain rare.

In a separate but unrelated case, a man suspected of an axe attack on Dutch princesses is set to face court, highlighting ongoing security challenges across Europe.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin. The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear before a magistrate in the coming days.
