As European travellers begin planning for the summer of 2026, data from Tripadvisor's Summer Travel Index reveals a clear frontrunner: the Spanish port city of Alicante. The report, which tracks year-on-year growth in bookings for travel between June and August, places this Costa Blanca destination at the top of the list for British holidaymakers, signalling a significant shift in travel patterns across the continent.

A Mediterranean Magnet

Alicante's surge in popularity is attributed to a powerful combination of factors. Its reliable, year-round sunny climate and relative affordability compared to other western Mediterranean hotspots make it an attractive proposition for tourists and digital nomads alike. Excellent flight connectivity from major UK and northern European airports further enhances its accessibility, placing its urban beaches and historic core within easy reach.

The city offers a distinctive blend of old and new. Visitors can explore the imposing Moorish fortress of Castillo de Santa Bárbara, which dominates the skyline, before descending to the seafront Explanada de España, a vibrant promenade famed for its wave-patterned marble tiles. The labyrinthine, flower-bedecked streets of the El Barrio Santa Cruz old town provide a stark contrast to the modern marina, encapsulating centuries of Mediterranean, Christian, and Moorish heritage.

Beyond the Beach

While the city's urban Postiguet Beach is a major draw, the region offers diverse experiences. A short boat trip leads to the Tabarca Island marine reserve, ideal for snorkelling in clear waters. Cultural offerings range from the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante (MACA) to the Ocean Race Museum, chronicling the round-the-world sailing competition. The central market is a hub for sampling local cheeses and cured meats.

Seasonal events also bolster its appeal. The colourful and historically significant Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) festivals, held in Alicante and surrounding towns from late April through mid-October, draw crowds with their elaborate parades and re-enactments.

The Tripadvisor index underscores the enduring appeal of southern Europe, with Spanish destinations like Playa de Palma, Málaga, and Sitges also ranking in the top ten. However, the list points to a broadening map for European summer travel. Established city-break favourites such as Budapest, Dublin, and Kraków remain popular, while emerging destinations like Alvor in Portugal and Ksamil in Albania are gaining significant traction.

This evolving travel landscape occurs against a backdrop of broader geopolitical and economic currents that affect European citizens. The EU Energy Chief has warned of prolonged energy price hikes stemming from Middle East conflict, a factor that could influence future travel costs. Meanwhile, within the EU, governance issues remain in focus, as seen when the Greek Parliament stripped immunity from 13 MPs in an EU farm subsidy fraud investigation.

For Alicante, the designation as 2026's top trending destination is a testament to its successful mix of authentic culture, leisure amenities, and value. It highlights a continued desire for the Mediterranean lifestyle, but with a growing appetite for destinations that offer depth beyond the sun-and-sand package. As European travellers seek out both classic and new experiences, cities that can balance their historic character with modern convenience are poised to thrive in the coming years.
