The Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2026 has been released, offering a data-driven snapshot of the world's safest countries. As conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Sahel continue to reshape global travel patterns, the index provides a clear guide for those seeking stability. Europe, as a continent, dominates the top ten, reinforcing its reputation as a haven for international travelers.

Europe's Stronghold on Peace

Iceland retains its position as the world's most peaceful country, a title it has held for over a decade. The Nordic nation benefits from low crime rates, a robust social safety net, and minimal military spending. Denmark and Ireland follow closely, with Portugal and Austria also making the top five. These countries consistently score high on indicators such as political stability, low levels of violent crime, and strong international relations.

Other European nations in the top ten include Switzerland, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic. Notably, the United Kingdom ranks 37th, while France sits at 66th, reflecting internal challenges such as social unrest and terrorism risks. The index, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, evaluates 163 countries based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, including ongoing domestic and international conflict, societal safety, and militarisation.

Travel Implications in a Turbulent World

For European travelers, the GPI offers practical insights. With global energy routes under threat and diplomatic efforts intensifying in Eastern Europe, the safest destinations remain within the continent. Iceland, for instance, offers volcanic landscapes and geothermal spas without the security concerns of more volatile regions. Similarly, Portugal's Algarve coast and Lisbon's cultural scene attract tourists seeking both relaxation and safety.

The index also highlights the impact of climate-related disruptions on travel. While El Niño may affect summer plans, the GPI's peace rankings remain stable, suggesting that environmental factors are less influential than political ones in determining safety.

Beyond the Top Ten: Regional Variations

While Europe leads, other regions show mixed results. New Zealand and Singapore rank 4th and 6th respectively, offering alternatives for long-haul travelers. Canada and Japan also feature in the top fifteen. However, the index notes a global decline in peacefulness over the past year, driven by the war in Ukraine, tensions in the South China Sea, and instability in the Sahel.

For those planning holidays, the GPI recommends checking country-specific advisories. The safest journeys are often those that combine low crime rates with political neutrality, a combination that European nations excel at. As industrial tourism gains ground, travelers can explore Europe's industrial heritage in safe environments, from Germany's Ruhr Valley to the UK's Ironbridge Gorge.

Practical Advice for Travelers

When booking trips, consider destinations with high GPI scores. Iceland, Denmark, and Ireland offer not only peace but also rich cultural experiences. For those on a budget, Slovenia and the Czech Republic provide affordable alternatives without compromising safety. Always check local laws and customs, as even peaceful countries have specific regulations.

The GPI also underscores the importance of sustainable tourism. Peaceful countries often have strong environmental protections, making them ideal for eco-conscious travelers. As global conflicts persist, Europe's peaceful pockets remain beacons of stability, inviting visitors to explore without fear.
