Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has forcefully rejected claims made by US President Donald Trump that she 'begged' for a photograph with him during the recent G7 summit in Évian, France. In a video statement posted to social media on Friday, Meloni described Trump's remarks as 'completely made-up' and said she was 'shocked' by his behaviour.

'I don't know why the President of the United States behaves this way with his own allies,' Meloni said, visibly frustrated. The exchange marks a notable deterioration in a relationship that had once been characterised by mutual admiration and ideological alignment.

A Relationship Under Strain

Trump, speaking to Italian journalist Daniele Compatangelo about their meeting on the sidelines of the G7, was quoted as saying: 'She's probably happy I talked to her. I didn't have to talk to her.' He added: 'She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.'

The comments have deepened a rift that has been widening for months. Rome has refused to support US military operations in Iran, and Trump has publicly criticised Pope Leo XIV, a move that did not sit well with Meloni's conservative base. The surge of misinformation following the summit has only added to the tension.

Meloni, who leads a right-wing coalition in Rome, had previously been seen as a natural ally of Trump. Their shared populist rhetoric and scepticism of multilateral institutions had forged a bond that now appears frayed.

G7 Context and Denials

During the G7 summit, Meloni had already sought to downplay reports of friction. 'Donald Trump and I are people with fairly strong characters; we are two people who strongly defend our national interest,' she told reporters. 'We don't need to clear the air when we disagree on something, because in the end each of us obviously understands the other's point of view.'

She denied media reports that spoke of 'jibes' between the two leaders, insisting that they had resumed talks 'with the same ease as the last time we met before this occasion.' Yet Trump's latest remarks suggest a different reality. The earlier attempt to patch up the rift now appears to have been short-lived.

The incident has also drawn attention to the broader dynamics at the G7, where Trump's 'I'm the boss' joke had already set an uneasy tone. European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who gifted Trump a personalised football jersey, have been navigating a delicate balance between alliance maintenance and national sovereignty.

Implications for Europe

Meloni's public rebuttal is significant not only for bilateral US-Italy relations but also for Europe's collective stance. As a key member of the European Union and NATO, Italy's position matters. The prime minister's willingness to call out a US president—especially one with whom she shares ideological ground—signals a growing assertiveness among European leaders.

The episode also underscores the challenges of transatlantic diplomacy in an era of personalised politics. With G7 leaders urging Trump to break the Ukraine deadlock, such personal spats risk distracting from substantive issues. Meloni's response, however, may reinforce her domestic standing as a leader unafraid to defend Italian interests, even at the cost of a once-friendly relationship.

As the fallout continues, European Pulse will monitor how this affects Italy's role in EU foreign policy and its alignment with Washington on key files, from Iran to Ukraine.
