A Russian strike on a village in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region killed at least 10 people on [date], according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. The attack, which hit a residential area, also wounded several others, with rescue teams still searching through the rubble.

Syniehubov said in a statement that the strike occurred in the village of [village name], about [distance] from the city of Kharkiv. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and the death toll could rise as debris is cleared. The governor did not specify the type of weapon used, but local reports indicated a guided bomb or missile.

The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, has been a frequent target of Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The city of Kharkiv itself, Ukraine's second-largest, has endured repeated bombardments, often hitting civilian neighborhoods and infrastructure.

Renewed attacks on civilian areas

This latest strike comes amid a broader pattern of Russian attacks on Ukrainian towns and cities, often with devastating civilian casualties. In recent weeks, overnight drone and missile attacks have killed at least 12 people across both countries, underscoring the war's relentless toll.

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly called on Western allies to provide more air defense systems to counter such strikes. The Kharkiv region has been particularly vulnerable due to its proximity to the border, leaving little time for residents to seek shelter.

In a separate development, Ukraine's drone campaign has also targeted Russian logistics, with a recent operation disabling seven of Wildberries' ten largest warehouses, a significant blow to Russian e-commerce infrastructure.

International response

The European Union and individual member states have condemned the attack. In a statement, the EU's foreign policy chief called it "another brutal reminder of Russia's disregard for human life." The United Kingdom, which has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv, reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine despite ongoing Russian threats.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's political landscape remains unsettled, with parliament reconvening with the defence and foreign ministries still leaderless. The lack of permanent ministers has complicated coordination with international partners, though military aid continues to flow.

The strike in Kharkiv region is likely to feature in upcoming discussions at the EU level, where member states are debating further sanctions against Russia and increased military assistance for Ukraine. The human cost of the war remains high, with thousands of civilians killed since the invasion began.

As rescue operations continue, local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow air raid alerts. The Kharkiv region has seen a series of attacks in recent months, including a similar strike on a village that also killed at least 10 people, highlighting the persistent danger.

The international community has repeatedly called for accountability for war crimes, and the EU has supported investigations by the International Criminal Court. However, with no end to the conflict in sight, civilians in Ukraine's eastern and northeastern regions continue to bear the brunt of the violence.
