The San Francisco Bay Area is gearing up to welcome the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara set to host six matches. For European fans, this presents a unique opportunity to combine top-tier football with one of America's most culturally rich and geographically stunning regions.

European Teams and Fixtures at Levi's Stadium

Levi's Stadium, known as San Francisco Bay Area Stadium during the tournament, will stage five group-stage fixtures and one Round of 32 match on 1 July. European sides feature prominently: Switzerland faces Qatar on 13 June in Group B, Austria meets Jordan on 16 June in Group J, and Turkey takes on Paraguay on 19 June in Group D. These matches offer a chance for European supporters to see their teams in action in a state-of-the-art venue that also hosted the 2016 Super Bowl.

The full fixture list includes:

  • 13 June – Group B: Qatar vs Switzerland
  • 16 June – Group J: Austria vs Jordan
  • 19 June – Group D: Turkey vs Paraguay
  • 22 June – Group J: Jordan vs Algeria
  • 25 June – Group D: Paraguay vs Australia
  • 1 July – Round of 32

Sporting Culture and Football Heritage

The Bay Area boasts a rich sporting tapestry. Levi's Stadium is home to the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, while the region also supports MLB's San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, the NBA's Golden State Warriors, and the NHL's San Jose Sharks. Football has deep roots here through MLS side San Jose Earthquakes and a large international fan base drawn from the area's multicultural communities. This diversity means European visitors will find familiar football culture alongside American sports traditions.

Landmarks and Natural Wonders

Beyond the stadium, Northern California offers an abundance of activities. Wine enthusiasts can explore Napa Valley and Sonoma, while history buffs might tour the old Alcatraz prison. The redwoods of Muir Woods and the scenic Pacific Coast vistas along Highway 1 provide unforgettable experiences. For those interested in slow travel, the region's rail connections offer a relaxed way to see the landscape—similar to the growing trend of luxury cruise and rail combos gaining traction across Europe.

Food Scene: A Culinary Journey

The Bay Area's food scene is as diverse as its population. From Tony's Pizza Napoletana in North Beach to the famous burritos in the Mission District, and from Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay to Mustards Grill in Napa Valley, there are renowned options everywhere. For dessert, Fentons Creamery in Oakland offers an old-school ice cream parlour experience. Sampling local flavours is a must for any visitor.

Fan Zones and Community Celebrations

Starting 11 June, fans can watch matches for free at more than 30 locations and participating sports bars across the Bay Area. Key sites include Thrive City at Chase Center, China Basin near the Giants' ballpark, and PIER 39 with its picturesque backdrop. In the East Bay, the Oakland Ballers will host events at Raimondi Park, while the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk adds a coastal vibe.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is about bringing communities together and celebrating the beautiful game in every corner of our region,” said Zaileen Janmohamed, President and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee. “We’re harnessing the breadth, diversity, and natural beauty of the entire Bay Area to ensure that no matter where you live or visit, you’ll have access to fun, community celebrations.”

Transportation and Practical Tips

To avoid heavy traffic and high parking fees, stadium officials recommend public transportation: Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail and bus lines, ACE/Capitol Corridor heavy rail, which connects to Caltrain for direct access to San Francisco. For European travellers accustomed to efficient rail networks, these options provide a familiar and convenient way to navigate the region.
