In 1504, Christopher Columbus found himself in a desperate situation on the island of Jamaica. His fourth voyage to the New World had ended with his ships run aground, leaving the admiral and his crew stranded on an island they could not leave. The island, known to its indigenous Taíno inhabitants as Xaymaca, meaning “land of wood and water,” had been claimed for Spain a decade earlier, but now it was a trap.
With no way to sail, the expedition's chief scribe, Diego Méndez, set off in a canoe to La Española (present-day Dominican Republic) to seek help from Governor Nicolás de Ovando. The journey took five days, but Ovando, who deeply distrusted Columbus, refused to send assistance and detained Méndez for months. Meanwhile, the castaways on Jamaica managed to trade with the Taíno, exchanging trinkets and European tools for food. For a while, the arrangement held, but tensions grew. A mutiny among the sailors further strained relations, and the islanders, weary of the conflict, eventually stopped supplying provisions. Columbus and his men were on the brink of starvation.
An astronomical gamble
It was then that Columbus turned to his astronomical tables. He carried the Almanach Perpetuum, a calendar compiled by the German astronomer Johann Müller, known as Regiomontanus, which predicted celestial events with remarkable accuracy. Consulting his papers, Columbus found that on 29 February 1504, a total lunar eclipse would be visible from Jamaica. During such an eclipse, the Moon takes on a deep crimson hue—what we now call a blood moon—due to the refraction of sunlight through Earth's atmosphere.
Three days before the event, Columbus summoned the Taíno leaders and warned them that his Christian God was angered by their decision to cut off food supplies. As a sign of divine wrath, he said, the Moon would disappear and turn blood red that very night.
When the night arrived, the sky behaved exactly as predicted. The Moon darkened and turned red, and the Taíno, terrified by what they saw as a supernatural omen, rushed to Columbus to beg for his intercession. According to his son Hernando's account, Columbus pretended to retreat into prayer, then reappeared to announce that his God had accepted their plea and would forgive them if they resumed supplying food. As the eclipse waned and the Moon returned to normal, the Taíno were convinced. Provisions flowed again, and eventually a ship chartered by Méndez arrived to rescue the castaways. Columbus reached Sanlúcar de Barrameda in November 1504 and died in Valladolid in May 1506.
Science as a survival tool
Columbus's ruse is one of the most celebrated examples of astronomical knowledge being used for survival. He was not the only explorer to employ such tactics, but his case stands out for its documentary precision: modern astronomers have confirmed that the eclipse of 29 February 1504 was indeed visible from Jamaica, matching the historical descriptions.
The episode underscores how scientific knowledge, even in the age of exploration, could be a practical tool. Columbus did not improvise; he calculated, waited, and used the science of his time with cool efficiency. It saved his life and that of his crew.
Today, eclipses continue to capture our imagination, though we no longer need to trick anyone to survive them. France scrambles to meet demand for eclipse glasses ahead of solar events, and Iceland braces for a rare total solar eclipse in August. The cultural impact of eclipses remains profound, from literature to film. Even Madrid's Prado museum has used AI to reimagine masterpieces under eclipse light.
Columbus's story is a reminder that the heavens have always influenced human affairs—sometimes as a source of wonder, and sometimes as a means of survival.
